Former WWE Superstar Droz pro wrestling career ended suddenly 20 years ago when he suffered a severe and life-changing neck injury during a match with D'Lo Brown during a WWE SmackDown taping on October 5, 1999 at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.
Droz landed on his head and fractured two vertebrae in his neck as a result of not getting the proper jump on D’Lo’s running powerbomb. Brown was unable to get a good enough grip on Droz and he hit the ring canvas in a horrible manner. He was immediately rushed to Nassau County Medical Center, where he underwent hours of surgery to reduce and stabilize the pressure on his injured neck.
The match was never broadcast, but footage of Droz being taken out on a stretcher has been seen in WWE's "Don't Try This at Home" announcements.
Droz was left in a quadriplegic state with no movement below the neck, although he has since regained this.
In a new interview with ProWrestlingStories.com, Droz reflects on the incident and reiterated he has no bad feelings toward D'Lo Brown for the accident,
"I have no hard feelings toward D’Lo Brown. Everyone who gets involved in athletics, including WWE, knows the risks that exist. It was an accident. No matter what puts you down, there's always another day. Even though I’m paralyzed and stuck in a wheelchair, my life is far from over."
