On a recent episode of Something To Wrestle, Bruce Prichard revealed the backstage reactions to the fans hating Lesnar vs Goldberg at WrestleMania XX.
The match has become infamous for the reaction from the New York crowd, which turned against both wrestlers after news broke they were both leaving the company afterward.
“I was sitting at the audio desk in the arena and just thinking to myself, ‘Holy God.’ Because you felt it. I mean, obviously, I think you could feel it at home. The audience knew what was going on. Both guys had been very public that they were leaving. All the audience wanted, the only thing they wanted in my opinion at this point is they wanted Steve to kick both of their asses. Because Steve wasn’t going anywhere and he was their guy. So it just, the crowd wanted it to be over. They wanted their opportunity to do the ‘you sold out’ stuff and basically boo ’em out of the building. I don’t know if Brock and Goldberg really expected it to be as bad as it was.
I think Brock did. I think Brock knew exactly what was going to happen when he went out there. But I don’t think that they thought it would happen to Goldberg. And, you know, Bill has a way, just the way he looks, it’s kind of like, ‘I don’t care’ and that audience felt it and they were like ‘fuck you too.’ They just wanted them out. ‘You don’t want to be here, we don’t want you. Go.’ And that was the feeling I got. It was painful to watch. It was very painful to watch in the arena because you sat there going, ‘ooh God.’ You feel for them. I was just happy when it was over.’”
