Current UFC Middleweight Champion Michael "The Count" Bisping recently appeared on The MMA Hour and revealed that his upcoming fight against Georges "Rush" St-Pierre at UFC 217 on November 4 could end up being his retirement fight:
āItās an iconic arena (Madison Square Garden), itās a big fight,ā Bisping said Monday on a special 400th edition of The MMA Hour. āItās Georges St-Pierre. Everybody knows who Georges St-Pierre is. Thereās not many people who have crossed over from the MMA fanbase into the mainstream, and Georges, Iād say heās there. Maybe not as much as, say, a Conor (McGregor) or a Ronda (Rousey), but heās not far behind, so itās a big fight. And Georges brings a lot to the table. Heās a tough challenge, and as a said, itās a big fight. I think this is going to be the biggest MMA fight of the year. Thereās three title fights on the event, so itās a huge event.
āAnd yeah, I think the career Iāve had, the years Iāve been in the UFC, the injuries Iāve had, the ups and downs, getting close to title fights and all of this, thereās a possibility ā this might be my last ever fight. I donāt know if Iāll fight again after this. So, what a way to go out if it is.
Just, Iāve been here for so long,ā Bisping explained. āIāve done it for so long now, and thereās other things to do in life. I mean, I still love this, donāt get me wrong. But you canāt do it forever. You canāt do it forever, and Georges ā Georges shouldāve stayed retired. He shouldāve retired as a champion. Iām going to beat Georges and Iāll retire as a champion, maybe. I havenāt made my mind up on that yet. It depends.
āIf thereās enough money involved, maybe Iāll stick around. But as of right now, I donāt know. My family wants me to retire. My wife wants me to retire. Thereās a lot of people saying, āMike, you should retire.ā My manager says it. So everyoneās in my ear saying, āMike, you should retire, you should retire as champion.ā Iāve earned some money along the way, Iāve had a great career, Iāve represented my country. Iāve achieved more through mixed martial arts than what I ever wouldāve dreamed of. We canāt keep going forever. Youāve got to know when the time is right, and Iām not saying the time is right, but I am contemplating it.
"Itās a 50/50 (chance I retire),ā Bisping said. āIt may or may not be. But not because ā you know when you hear Dana (White) say, āWhen people start talking about retirement, that means theyāre done.ā That doesnāt mean that at all. Iām just trying to think smartly here, because you canāt do it forever. You really canāt. And youāve got to know when to walk away.
āNext year Iāve got three acting projects lined up that are all big ā three big movies and a Netflix series. Iāve got things going on outside the Octagon and Iāve got money that I can earn outside of the Octagon. Ultimately, we do this for the money. Youāre doing this right now because you want to earn money. I fight in the UFC because I want to earn money. And if I can earn money outside of the Octagon thatās just as good, that I donāt have to risk my health for, then it makes sense, and I can retire as the champion and parlay that into an active, successful career outside of the Octagon. And retiring a champion helps that. Retiring after you struggle through a ton of losses, and you once were champion and then you get seven shades of sh*t knocked out of you, youāre still making a payday ā Iāve done myself an injustice there.
āWeāll see,ā Bisping said. āIām still enjoying it. Iāve just had a great training session with (coach) Jason Parillo. Sparred five fives this morning, ran this morning. Iām going to go train tonight. The fire is still there, Iām still hungry as ever. I still love this sport and Iām going to put a beating on GSP like heās never experienced. Iām going to remind him why he retired.ā
