WWE SmackDown LIVE COVERAGE & RESULTS (08/22/2017)

Check back here for live coverage and results of tonight's edition of WWE SmackDown Live.

1. The show opens with the arrival of the WWE United States Champion, "The Phenomenal" A.J. Styles. Styles announces that he's bringing back the U.S. Title Open Challenge. He's answered by the former U.S. Champion Kevin Owens. Styles says he doesn't want to have the defend it against Kevin Owens anymore since he beat him at SummerSlam. Kevin Owens says that he was screwed in that match by the Special Guest Referee Shane McMahon. Shane's music hits and here he comes. After all three of them discuss it in the ring, and Shane agrees that Owens will get another rematch tonight. But Kevin Owens wants to pick his own referee. Shane agrees, but announces that this is Kevin's last shot at the U.S. Title as long as A.J. Styles is the champion.

2. Backstage, General Manager Daniel Bryan is talking on his cell phone and says something about surprises. He's interrupted by Jinder Mahal and The Singh Brothers. Bryan informs them that The Singh Brothers will have to face Shinsuke Nakamura tonight.

3. Kevin Owens is walking backstage and comes across Sami Zayn. Owens says that Sami is just who he's looking for. Kevin Owens wants Sami Zayn to be the referee for the U.S. Title Match tonight. Owens leaves after asking Sami to at least think about it.

4. Aiden English is in the ring, singing a song. He's interrupted by BOBBY ROODE!

5. Aiden English vs. Bobby Roode

It's Aiden English vs. former NXT Champion Bobby Roode. Roode kicks English in the stomach and Clotheslines him over the top rope as they go to commercial. Back from break, Roode sends English into the corner and lights him up with chops. Inverted Atomic Drop and a forearm by Roode. Blockbuster now by Roode. Director's Cut by English but Roode kicks out at 2. English goes for the Swanton, Roode moves, Spinebuster by Roode. Roode then hits the Glorious DDT for the win.

After the match, Roode is interviewed by Renee Young. Roode says that SmackDown has just gone from great to GLORIOUS!

6. Daniel Bryan and Chad Gable are talking backstage. Daniel says he's sorry that Jordan left Gable on his own. Bryan says that in exchange for trading Jordan to Raw, Kurt Angle put him in contact with SHELTON BENJAMIN, who appears in Daniel's office! Bryan says that Gable and Shelton can form a new tag team and try their luck next week on SmackDown.

7. Sami and Owens in the hallway now. Sami says that he's not going to help Owens tonight.

8. The Hype Bros (Zack Ryder & Mojo Rawley) vs. SmackDown Tag Team Champions Jimmy & Jey Uso

The Hype Bros come out first and then they take a commercial break after they enter the ring. Mojo and Jey starting things out after the opening bell. Mojo got the better of Jey until Jimmy distracted Mojo and Jey capitalized on it. They're working over Mojo now. Zack gets the tag and he's taking it to Jimmy. The action spills outside the ring. They get back in the ring and Jimmy finishes off Ryder with a big Superkick to the face. Usos get the win.

After the tag team match, Shinsuke Nakamura is seen walking backstage. He'll be making his entrance after the commercial break.

9. "The King of Strong Style" Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samir & Sunil: The Singh Brothers

Back from commercial break, Nakamura is making his way to the ring. The Singh Brothers come out next and do their usual intro for WWE Champion Jinder Mahal. It appears as though Mahal will be watching this match from ringside. Nakamura gets the first shots in on the Singhs. Nakamura is having his way with the Singhs now. Nakamura throws them out of the ring, right in front of Mahal. The Singhs get back in the ring and now the numbers advantage is coming into play. Nakamura fights back forces one of the Singhs to submit to a Triangle Choke. After the match, Mahal Superkicks Nakamura but Nakamura answers with a Kinshasa.

10. Owens is walking backstage and is stopped by Breezango. They want to be co-referees for his match but Owens says he doesn't want them to. Owens then runs into Baron Corbin and they make a deal that Corbin will be the referee but if Owens wins back the U.S. Title, Corbin gets the first shot at it.

11. Naomi & "The Irish Lass-Kicker" Becky Lynch vs. "Ms. Money in the Bank" Carmella & SmackDown Live Women's Champion Natalya Neidhart

The new Women's Champion Natalya comes out first. She cuts a promo on Naomi and says that she's going to bring honor back to the title. Out comes Carmella and James Ellsworth. Carmella reminds Natalya that she could cash in the MITB at any time. Out comes Becky Lynch and then Naomi. Carmella and Naomi start things out. Carmella quickly tags Natalya. They lock up and then it goes to a commercial break. Back from break, Becky is in control of Natalya. Nattie quickly turns things around though. Sleeper Hold by Nattie. Discuss Clothesline by Nattie. Nattie goes to tag Carmella but Carmella doesn't want the tag. Becky tags Naomi and Naomi goes for her finish but Nattie counters. Nattie then tags Carmella and Carmella gets a Suplex from Becky and then a Split-Legged Moonsault from Naomi and they get the win.

12. Backstage, Dasha Fuentes announces that Dolph Ziggler is back on SmackDown Live. Ziggler cuts a promo venting his frustrations about his career.

13. Lana and Tamina Snuka are backstage. Lana is getting Tamina psyched up.

14. A.J. Styles is on his way to the ring and runs into Baron Corbin. Styles says that Corbin can get a title shot if he answers the U.S. Title Open Challenge when Styles retains over Owens. Corbin immediately makes his way out to the ring as they take a commercial break.

15. WWE United States Championship Match: "The Phenomenal" A.J. Styles vs. "The Prizefighter" Kevin Owens with "The Lone Wolf" Baron Corbin as the Special Guest Referee

Owens is out first and then Styles. The bell rings and KO immediately rolls out of the ring. Styles is talking to Corbin and KO attacks him from behind. Dropkick from Styles. KO ends up outside the ring and Styles nails him with a Flying Forearm as they take a commercial break. Back from break, Pele Kick to Owens. KO rolls out of the ring, grabs Styles, Fallaway Slam into the barricade. Back in the ring now, a 2-count for Owens. Rear Chinlock now by KO. Suplex/Facebuster by Styles. Series of hard strikes by Styles. Fireman's Carry Neckbreaker by Styles but he only gets a 2-count. Calf Crusher now by Styles. Corbin orders for the hold to be broken because KO's fingertips got to the ropes. KO nearly beats Styles by rolling him up. Shane McMahon comes out and argues with Corbin. Corbin gives Shane the referee striped shirt. Shane is now the referee. Phenomenal Forearm by Styles for the 3-count. A.J. Styles retains the United States Championship and Kevin Owens gets no more U.S. Title shots as long as Styles is the champion.
