At Sunday night's Raw-exclusive WWE Extreme Rules event, The Miz defeated Dean Ambrose to become the brand new Intercontinental Champion; however, not without a great deal of controversy involved.
During the match, Miz told Maryse to slap him in an attempt to get Ambrose disqualified, which would have meant that, per the stipulation set forth, Ambrose would have lost the title. However, the referee did not fall for the ploy and ordered Maryse to leave the ringside area. Maryse, however, came back down to the ringside area to distract the referee, which allowed Miz to throw Ambrose into him. This caused the referee to think that Ambrose intentionally hit him, which led Miz to hit the Skull Crushing Finale for the win.
Miz's victory marks his seventh reign as champion.
