FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Looking back at WWE Royal Rumble 2014

Welcome one and all to another hard-hitting edition of Flashback Friday Reviews right here on WrestlingNewsSource.com! We are ever so close to this year’s Royal Rumble, Kurt Angle is going into the Hall of Fame and the WWE continues to stack up the star power heading into this year’s rumble. To hold you over until the pay per view, I am bringing you a review of one of the more controversial rumbles in recent history. Today, I am covering The Royal Rumble of 2014, arguably one of the most infamous rumbles of all-time. The big matches on the card include Daniel Bryan vs Bray Wyatt, John Cena vs Randy Orton and of course, The Royal Rumble match itself. Let’s get it on!

Opening Promo

We have a voice-over talking over images of previous Rumble winners and Wrestlemania. Focus shifts to Orton vs Cena which is hailed as the biggest rematch in WWE history (Make of that what you want). More clips of eliminations and possible winners like Alberto Del Rio, Ryback, Dolph Ziggler and Batista. Promo ends with the voice-over proclaiming that the road to Wrestlemania begins now.

Daniel Bryan vs Bray Wyatt

The whole arena is chanting “Yes” in unison as the most popular superstar on the roster enters the ring. To quote Cm Punk “It was Daniel Bryan’s year”. Daniel had shone throughout, had a cup of coffee with the world championship and been pushed aside in favour of Batista vs Randy Orton for Wrestlemania. Well, nobody told the fans that and it will come back to bite the WWE in the ass. Anyways, Bryan had joined The Wyatts but our hero turned on Bray Wyatt after a steel cage match which led to one of the best moments in recent Raw history as a whole arena chanted along with Bryan (Makes me smile every time I see it). Bray, understandably, wants to kill Daniel Bryan and so, we have this match.

They lock-up, Bryan begins throwing rights before Bray takes over with a big elbow. Bray steps on Bryan’s fingers, Bryan fights back and drops Bray with a knee to the ribs. Bryan grabs a clinch and begins kneeing Bray in the ribs. Harper intervenes and Bray attacks Bryan from behind. Bray Irish whips Bryan but Bryan ducks a clothesline and drops Harper with a suicide dive. Rowan wants a piece of Bryan but referee John Cone ejects Harper and Rowan. We have a level-playing field now, Bryan dives onto Bray and nails a crossbody in the ring for two. Bray looks like he tweaked his knee so Bryan starts kicking the knee. Bray drops Bryan to the floor with a huge chop, Bray has Bryan sitting by the steps.

Bryan sidesteps Bray who crashes into the steel steps. Bray clutches at his leg and begins hobbling, Bryan chopblocks the leg. Bryan kicks Bray over and over in the corner, dragon screw legwhip by Bryan. Bryan stomps Bray’s head into the mat ala Super Dragon. Bray powers out before a one count, Bray headbutts Bryan in the chest. Forearm blows from Bray, Bryan goes back to the leg of Wyatt. Running dropkick to the knee by Bryan, Bryan tries suplexing Bray from the apron into the ring. Bray pulls Bryan to the apron, Bray goes low and smashes Bryan arm first into the apron. Suplex slam by Bray, Bray wrenches at the eyes and neck of Bryan. Bryan starts drilling Bray before Bray sidesteps Bryan and Bryan crashes down to the floor.

Bray bangs Bryan’s head against the ringpost, Cole talks of a possible concussion that Bryan may have suffered in the build-up to the match. Senton on the floor by Bray, cover in the ring and Bryan kicks out at two. Bray taunts Bryan before choking Bryan with his boot. Bray begins clubbing Bryan in the neck before applying a reverse chinlock. One-armed uranage by Bray, Bryan is clutching his neck and shoulder. Bray begins spider-walking towards Bryan. Corner clothesline by Bray, cover and a two for The Eater of Worlds. Another sleeper from Bray, scoop slam but Bryan dodges an elbow from Bray. Bryan nails a running clothesline on Bray, Bryan is rallying himself for an offensive flurry. Kicks by Bryan, drop toehold and Bray pounces off the middle turnbuckle. Frankensteiner by Bryan, cover and Bray kicks out at two.

More kicks and uppercuts from Bryan, Bryan flips overs Bray off an Irish whip but Bray shuts off Bryan with a huge clothesline. Bryan blocks a suplex and lowbridges Bray, Bryan nails a tornado DDT from the apron. Bryan dropkicks Bray into the barricade, missile dropkick and kip-up from Bryan. More Yes kicks, wham and a cover from Bryan. 1…2. Bray kicks out! Bray is rocked, has no clue where he is while Bryan is pumping himself up and Bryan is looking for the kill. Running dropkicks by Bryan until Bray explodes with a clothesline that turns Bryan inside-out. Two count for Bray, Bray goes for Sister Abigail, Bryan rolls through for a schoolboy. Two count for Bray, Bryan is trying for The Yes Lock, Bray bites the hand to survive The Yes Lock.

Bray headbutts Bryan to break down Bryan, uppercuts by Bray. Bray prepares for a superplex, Bryan headbutts Bray. Bray returns the favour, Bryan wins the war and Bray falls to the mat. Splash by Bryan, Bray powders and Bryan goes for the suicide dive. Bray catches Bryan mid-flight for a Sister Abigail into the barricade. Bryan is dead weight, Bray collects his prey. Sister Abigail and Bray covers Bryan for the win.

Excellent match from these two, one of the best Rumble opening matches of all-time. Bryan and Bray had a lot of chemistry and showed great psychology throughout the match. Bryan saw Bray tweak his knee and went after it, focused on it the whole match, Bray knew Bryan had a concussion so Bray messed up Bryan’s neck with elbows, forearms, boots and holds. It was a war of attrition for both.

Ultimately, Bray would overcome Bryan as Bryan carelessly went for a suicide dive as Bray would not stay down and got caught with The Sister Abigail which led to the pin-fall. The facial expressions, the other Wyatts being sent to the back and the crowd being all-in on Daniel Bryan were all nice touches and elements which combined help make this match great. Bray goes over which would be the right call as they were looking at Cena vs Wyatt as a big match.

Winner: Bray Wyatt over Daniel Bryan via Sister Abigail!

Brock Lesnar W/ Paul Heyman vs Big Show

This is not the first time these two have faced off at The Royal Rumble (They fought at 2003’s Royal Rumble for the coveted number thirty spot). At that time, Show was a big deal thanks to his feud with Brock but that was not the case in 2014. News was that Show was injured coming into this match so, this should be some mindless fun with Lesnar cannibalising Show. They had a little angle on Raw where Show manhandle Lesnar, more than once.

Lesnar takes down Show, Heyman throws in a chair and Lesnar wears out Show with the chair. Show rolls out to the floor, Lesnar taunts Show over and over. Lesnar does not let Show stand, more chair shots. Show nails a KO Punch on Lesnar who was rushing in with a chair, Lesnar rolls to the floor. Show punches Lesnar once on the barricade and hurls The Beast Incarnate back in the ring. Gut punches by Show, Brock ducks The KO Punch and F-5s Show for the win. Afterwards, Lesnar wears out Show some more with the chair.

They did the best they could, Lesnar nailed Show with the chair a number of times. I don’t think they needed a comeback from Show, it was unnecessary to protect Show in my eyes, it made Lesnar look less like a monster. I would have Show be decimated by Lesnar, hammering home the point that Lesnar is an animal. Poor Show seems to have no friends either as Lesnar continues busting chairs over the back of The Giant.

Winner: Lesnar over Show via F-5!

Killing Time/Shield Promo/Randy Orton Interview

We get to see replays of Show being attacked by Lesnar. Show is helped out of the arena and milks it for all that it is worth. The Shield pop up on our screens, they are all in the rumble, they argue about showing one another their numbers before Seth says “It does not matter what number you have, the only number that matters is 3. Believe in The Shield”. Here comes dickhead Orton which is the best kind of Orton, Orton claims Cena will be destroyed and put to the back of the line. Orton does not fear Batista, Brock Lesnar or Bray Wyatt. Orton believes to be the face of the company and everyone will know that Randy Orton is number one when it comes to WWE.

(WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match) John Cena vs Randy Orton ©

Cena and Orton unified the belts at TLC with Orton coming out on top over his long-term rival John Cena. Facing John Cena put Randy Orton off his game because deep down, Orton knows Cena has his number. Orton would attack John’s father at ringside (Not the first-time Orton had done this) so, it’s super heated and personal between Orton and Cena. To begin, we have loud Daniel Bryan chants.

Side headlock by Orton, Cena grabs Orton in a headscissors. Orton clubs and beats down Cena, knee to the head. Another side headlock by Orton, shoulder block by Cena. Cena tees off on Orton, facebuster and a cover, two count for Cena. Cena runs into an elbow from Orton, suplex by Orton. Cover and a two for the champion, knee to the head and headbutt by Orton. Orton grabs a reverse chinlock, Cena battles out and is looking for a Boston Crab. Orton kicks off Cena who falls to the floor. Apron suplex by Orton and another rest hold from Orton. Cena fires up, clothesline to the floor by the challenger. Orton whips Cena into the steel steps. Orton gets on the fans and incorporates it into the match. Cena catches Orton, could be an AA but Orton slips out and nails a DDT for a two count.

Orton nails his Garvin Stomp and poses in the corner. Cena sneaks up on Orton posing, electric chair drop. Two shoulder tackles, side suplex and it could be time for a Five Knuckle Shuffle. Orton counters with a boot to the head and nails a powerslam for a two count. Variation of a neckbreaker by Cena, two count for the challenger. Cena climbs up to the top rope, Orton meets Cena on the top turnbuckle. Cena headbutts Orton, Orton drops and Cena scores with his Kenta Kobashi like leg drop. Two count for Cena, Cena is stalking Orton. Second attempt for The AA, Orton counters for his unique backbreaker. Orton has Cena in position for his rope-assisted DDT but Cena backdrops Orton to the floor.

I have no clue what Cena was trying to do but Cena tries sliding out of the ring with his face first so Orton DDTs Cena on the floor. Cover and a two for Orton, Orton pounds the mat for The RKO. Cena sees it coming and drops Orton for an STF. Quick as a cat, Orton makes it to the ropes and Orton hotshots Cena. Side suplex by Cena out of nowhere, Five Knuckle Shuffle and Cena measures for an AA. Orton hits the referee with his feet as Cena locks in the STF for the tap-out from Orton. Orton powders and grabs one of his championships, wham to the face of Cena. Orton covers and Cena stays alive after kicking out at two. Cena catches Orton by surprise with an AA, 1…2.. Orton kicks out at two and a half.

Orton nails an RKO when Cena tries to scoop him up, 1..2.. and Cena kicks out of an RKO. Orton takes a look at Cena and Orton is going for The Punt, Cena dodges and Cena tries for The AA. Orton slides out into a victory roll and transitions into The STF. Cena counters for a crossface, Orton slides out and nails an AA. Cover and it’s two for the champion. Orton stands over Cena,Cena drops Orton with an RKO and Orton kicks out at two and a half. Cena looks at Orton and decides that the way to beat Orton is an Avanlanche AA. Orton wriggles free but Cena still scores with a Tornado DDT and Cena claps on The STF. Cena drags Orton to the middle of the ring, Orton could be tapping out at any moment.

The lights go out and The Wyatts are here, Cena gets distracted and Orton pins Cena with an RKO out of nowhere. Orton stares at The Wyatts in confusion as The Wyatts look over the carcass of the fallen John Cena. Bray enters the ring with Harper and Rowan. Big Boot by Harper, Rowan pummels Cena. Corner clothesline and huge lariat combination before Bray decides Bray wants to join the party. Sister Abigail and goodnight sweet Cena.

Ok, let’s analyse this match. In the beginning, Orton and Cena mat wrestle and feel one another out while the crowd tells them exactly what they think of that. My problem comes in the form of the story they executed on Raw the week prior. Orton destroyed Cena’s father, Cena was livid and thus, Cena should want to kill Orton. Immediately, I have a disconnect from the match because Cena is mat wrestling with the guy like it is friendly match with a good pal. It’s similar to when Bray Wyatt targeted Roman Reigns and had pictures of Roman’s daughter. What did Roman do? Roman went on to lock-up and chain wrestle with the creepy man who has pictures of his daughter. It just does not match up with the story they are telling in the ring.

Secondly, the crowd hated this match. I have seen crowds mentally check out of matches, we have experienced it many times but I had not seen such a huge mental checkout in a world championship match. Perhaps the Universal Championship match between Finn Balor and Seth Rollins could rival this reaction, I am not sure I would have to give it a re-watch. Anyways, the crowd does not give a damn and Orton does his best but he just can’t get the fans to care for this match. The only reactions came in the form of The Wyatts and the finisher stealing.

Overall, it just did not work. These two had so many wars but this is not a match that they are going to look back on with fond memories. They never had the crowd, they could not get the crowd and honestly, what was going on in the ring was not enough to get anyone invested in the match. The multiple AA attempts, the Orton poses, the false finishes and we even had a referee bump that did not lead to the finish. It was all over the place, a bad night for the leader of The Cenation and The Viper. Positive of the match: we have a feud going forward in John Cena vs Bray Wyatt, a big test for Wyatt. Unfortunately, we all know how it turned out but at this time, the future looked bright.

Winner: Randy Orton over John Cena via RKO!

The Royal Rumble Match (Winner to receive World Championship opportunity in the main event of Wrestlemania)

Thirty men, two men start off with more entering at timed intervals. Eliminations occur when a competitor is thrown over the top rope and both feet touch the floor. The winner goes to Wrestlemania to challenger for the World Heavyweight Championship, an event that always attracts wrestling fans because we want to see who is returning, what feuds are going to be setup and who is the next chosen one so to speak for the WWE. There’s nothing more fun than sitting around with friends and randomly choosing a number and being reduced to tears as you realize Fandango or Curtis Axel is your pick.

Entrants 1 to 5

CM Punk is your number one entrant, the powers that be aka The Authority are not fans of The Voice of The Voiceless. The odds are against CM Punk, and we have Seth Rollins entering at number two (This should be good). Punk charges down Rollins, Rollins turns the tide but no man can get a clear advantage. Sole butt kick by Punk before Rollins nails a single leg dropkick. Flying forearm by Rolllins and running knee by CM Punk. Both men are kicking one another before we have a double knockdown. Number three is Damien Sandow, Sandow goes right after Punk.

Sandow and Rollins beat down Punk, Punk hangs on and fights off the two. Neckbreaker and a DDT by Punk on Sandow and Rollins, Punk almost has Rollins thrown out but Rollins recovers. Number four is Cody Rhodes, Rhodes goes after Sandow, a bit of history there. Crossrhodes to Sandow, Rollins pairs off with Rollins. Sandow is elevated over the top rope by Punk.

Damien Sandow has been eliminated by CM Punk!

Punk and Rhodes have Rollins in deep trouble before number 5 which is Kane comes down to the ring. Kane big boots Rhodes and uppercuts CM Punk. Kane tees off on Punk, corner clothesline by Kane. Sidewalk slam by Kane who prepares for a Chokeslam, Punk kicks Kane and throws over Kane.

Kane has been eliminated by Punk!

Rollins, Rhodes and Swagger gang up on Rusev. Number eight is Kofi Kingston, Kingston nails Punk with a massive clothesline (Punk would later say that the clothesline gave him a concussion in his infamous shoot with Colt Cabana).

Rhodes and Punk square off, the ring is starting to fill-up. Number nine is Jimmy Uso, Jimmy goes after everyone. Jimmy begins chopping and headbutting Punk, Rollins and Kingston. Everyone is in a corner doing very little, we could be at a dull period folks. Number ten is Goldust who goes after Rollins. Goldust drops Rollins and Jimmy Uso before Rusev bulldozes Goldust. Rusev is eliminated by at least 4 people, I thought he showing was a lot stronger than that.

Rusev has been eliminated by the group!

Entrants 11 to 15

Kofi does his signature crazy way to survive spot as Kofi jumps from the barricade onto the ring apron. Dean Ambrose is number eleven. The Shield team up to beat down Jimmy Uso and Punk, number twelve is Dolph Ziggler. Missile dropkick on Ambrose by Ziggler, punches to the head of Ambrose. Not a lot going on as we await the next entrant. Number thirteen is R-Truth, Truth pounds on Ambrose before The Shield take down Truth. Rollins places Truth on the apron and Ambrose dropkicks Truth out of the match. Seconds later, Ambrose and Rollins throw out Jimmy Uso..

Jimmy Uso/R-Truth have been eliminated by The Shield!

Number fourteen is Kevin Nash, Nash looks great. Nash eliminates Swagger immediately.

Khali has been eliminated by Roman Reigns!

Cody has been eliminated by Goldust!

Goldust has been eliminated by Roman Reigns!

In at number seventeen is Sheamus, returning from injury to a good reaction. Sheamus goes after all of The Shield, ten beats of The Bodhran on Ambrose. Irish Curse on Rollins and a Brogue Kick on Reigns. Sheamus cannot get out Reigns as The Shield recover to kick Sheamus’ ass. In comes Miz at number eighteen. Punk is in the corner talking to the referee, yet to move for a long, long time. Number nineteen is Fandango, we have a pile-up as Sheamus, Miz  and Ambrose try to get out Fandango. The Shield go after Sheamus. Number twenty is El Torito. Seeing The Shield bump for El Torito is ridiculous. Punk even sells a hurricanrana for El Torito. Torito eliminates Fandango with a hurricanrana before Reigns tosses Torito.

Fandango has been eliminated by Torito!

Torito has been eliminated by Roman Reigns!

Entrants 21 to 25

Cannot believe I just saw that. Anyways, number twenty-one is Cesaro. Cesaro Swing on Miz, Punk dropkicks Miz in the middle of the swing. Cesaro takes down Rollins and Ambrose, Cesaro Swing on Rollins. Number twenty-two is Luke Harper. Reigns saves Rollins from elimination with a Spear, Harper lays out Punk and goes after Rollins. Number twenty-three is Jey Uso, Jey goes after Cesaro. Superkick by Jey on Cesaro, Harper and Cesaro uppercut one another. Harper boots Cesaro to knock down The Swiss Superman.

Number twenty-four is JBL? In suit and all? This should last long. JBL tells Michael to hold his jacket and Reigns tosses out JBL. Number twenty-five is Erick Rowan. We have two big teams in the rumble now. Harper clotheslines out Miz.

JBL has been eliminated by Roman Reigns!

Miz has been eliminated by Harper!

Entrants 26 to 30

Jey Uso has been eliminated by Harper!

Ryback is number twenty-six, Ryback stomps all over Rollins. Sheamus and Cesaro face-off, huge slugfest. Match has slowed down a lot now. Number twenty-seven is Alberto Del Rio, Del Rio goes after Ryback. Number twenty-eight is Batista, Batista knocks down everything in sight. Out goes Erick Rowan, out goes Ryback. Del Rio tries a cross armbreaker on Batista, Batista powers up and dumps out Del Rio

Ryback/Rowan/Del Rio have been eliminated by Batista!

Number twenty-nine is Big E, Big E slaps down Batista. Nothing is really going on which is surprising. Crowd begin chanting for Daniel Bryan, crowd looks up in anticipation. Number thirty is Rey Mysterio and the crowd is pissed! To be fair, it is not Rey’s fault. The WWE were braindead and did not even think of Bryan. Crowd is booing heavily for the match. Big E is clotheslined over by Sheamus!

Big E has been eliminated by Sheamus!

Mysterio nails a 619 on Rollins but Rollins is able to enzuigiri Mysterio over the top rope. Roman Reigns nails Harper with a Superman Punch which sends Harper out. Afterwards, Reigns throws out Ambrose, Rollins and Cesaro after Ambrose tried to dump out Roman.

Mysterio has been eliminated by Rollins!

Finishers all around as Punk, Batista, Sheamus and Reigns show off their fancy moves before Punk emerges as the victor of the war. However, Kane appears and drags out CM Punk before Chokeslamming Punk through the announce table.

Cm Punk has been eliminated by Kane!

Three remain, Batista, Sheamus and Reigns. Crowd begin booing like crazy, Sheamus knocks down Reigns. Batista and Sheamus trade blows, Batista scores with a corner clothesline and a powerslam on Reigns. Sheamus nails a rolling fireman’s carry on Batista. Sheamus motions for The Brogue Kick, Batista ducks out of the way. Sheamus is elevated onto the apron. Reigns shoves off Sheamus. Down to two now.

Sheamus has been eliminated by Roman Reigns!

Stare-down as Batista loses control, Reigns nails a clothesline. Reigns measures for a Superman Punch, Batista staggers to his feet. Spear and an ugly one by Batista, Batista wastes too much time and pays for it with a Spear. Reigns picks up Batista but Batista reverses Reigns and Batista is going to Wrestlemania. Crowd chants No and boos over Batista’s victory.  They show all of Reigns’ eliminations after the match which is simply ridiculous I mean we get it, you like him and he’s the guy to watch out for, I do not need to be hit over the head with it, I am capable of figuring it out. Poor old Batista stands atop the top turnbuckle and the fans let The Animal know that Daniel Bryan was their hero, not Batista.

The Royal Rumble of 2014 was an average Rumble in my eyes, it had slow moments for sure but it was not as tough a watch as say, the New Generation rumbles or some of the early rumbles. High points included Nash’s return, Reign’s domination, Sheamus’s return and Batista. I expected CM Punk to put on an iron man like performance but Punk spent the better part of the match in the corner talking to the referee, it was disappointing for Punk who did not have a memorable performance for his last time in a WWE ring. There were dull moments, I expected Shield to run wild and Batista but that did not really happen. Reigns’ eliminations were sprinkled throughout the match so there were large parts where guys just paired off and hugged one another like boxers in the corners.

The ending was good in the sense that in theory, everyone loves a good comeback story. Whether it be a returning superstar from the past trying to relive the glory days, the old dog who has one more round left in him or a superstar returning from a crippling injury, it usually is an easy story to tell and grabs people’s attention easily. It was good to see Batista again, he looked blown up after two minutes but it was nice to The Animal in a WWE ring again. Was it the right choice to win? Well….

Oh boy, let me try and tackle this fairly and in an unbiased manner. Just watching that ending brought back a lot of memories of how me like many WWE fans were feeling at the time. How dare they not give us Daniel Bryan, how dare they have the audacity to not give us Bryan when he is our hero, how dare they try to spoon feed us Batista. It honestly reminds me of Luger and Bret, Vince was so fixated on Luger as The Next Hogan when it was clear, everyone and their mother wanted Bret. Do they hate us? Do they not care? The truth of the matter is no they did not, they can put whatever spin they want on that story but the bottom line is we forced them to put Daniel Bryan in the main event. They did not see it, they did not want it and they were arrogant enough to think we would lay down for them and let them have their way. Finally, enough was enough.

Daniel Bryan would have his moment and it was not WWE’s plan. However, thank God they did listen to the fans and we were able to enjoy Wrestlemania 30, it was a great moment for Daniel Bryan and a great moment for the fans. Their hero did it, he made it to the dance. Some people do not like Bryan, I understand that but you could not say that was not a great story, it was so emotional and the pay-off was one of the best feel-good moments in recent memory but there will always be that thought in the back of my head: This was not the original plan and WWE were clueless when it came to their fanbase (Many would argue that even today they do not know what their fans’ want).

So, that was Royal Rumble of 2014. One good match on this show and it is Bray Wyatt vs Daniel Bryan, these two knocked it out of the park as was per usual for Bryan who had the best year in wrestling.  Lesnar and Show you could hardly call a match, it was more of a showcase of Lesnar’s abilities. Cena vs Orton was just not clicking for me, the crowd certainly did not help. The storyline development with Bray going after Cena was a nice touch though. The rumble was average with an ending that felt flat and left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth. That was a lot of ranting and after digesting that Rumble, I can gladly say I hope that this year’s rumble is not a fiasco. This has been another edition of Flashback Friday, feedback is always appreciated and of course, I will see you all next week for another edition of Flashback Friday Reviews!
