Pro Wrestling Illustrated is often cited as one of the best professional wrestling publications of all time, so much so that it's annual PWI Awards are highly anticipated and seen as an accolade for the best talent in the industry. The awards this year were no different. WWE Champion AJ Styles took home the title of wrestler of the year in PWI’s 44th annual Achievement Award balloting. However, there was one shocking results that stood out when fans actually voted Roman Reigns as the Most Hated Wrestler of the Year.
PWI actually responded to this and noted that it was the first time in their history that a babyface won the Most Hated Wrestler of the Year category. If that's not a message for senior WWE officials you've got to wonder what is?!
“More than a quarter of our respondents cast their vote for Roman Reigns as the Most Hated Wrestler of the Year, marking the first time in the history of the PWI Achievement Awards that a so-called “fan favorite” has won this distinction” said PWI.
It's interesting to note the likes of Rowdy Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, Randy Savage and Steve Austin all won the award in their career but it was their actions through cheating, attacking fan favorites and forming unimagined alliances that earned them that award. Roman Reigns on the other hand has done nothing in his recent career to earn this award.
Is it time to turn the good guy...BAD?!
