FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Looking back at WWE Survivor Series 1989

Welcome one and all to another edition of Flashback Friday right here on WrestlingNewsSource.com! With Survivor Series being only two days away, the card has been set and it looks like this pay per view could turn out to be one of WWE’s most interesting of the year. However, I am not here to talk about this year’s Survivor Series. I am here to talk to you about WWE’s Survivor Series of 1989! Yes we are going that far back brothers to the golden era where The Hulkster was running wild, where Macho Madness was spreading all over and The Ultimate Warrior was loading up the rocket ship or something like that, Warrior was always so difficult to understand. This was the first Survivor Series to feature four man teams a supposed to the five man teams of the past and every match on the card is an elimination style Survivor Series match so break out the chip and dip, get your complaining pants on and feel the nostalgia man for this is Survivor Series 1989.

Opening Promo

What’s better than Thanksgiving Day? Hulk Hogan promising to beat the crap out of The Million Dollar Team. We see promos from many superstars in the WWF who are thankful various things like their bodies, their partners, being king, being perfect and  kicking ass. Vince Mcmahon’s voice gives us a rundown of all five matches that will take place tonight. Gorilla Monsoon welcomes us to the action in Chicago while Jesse Ventura runs down Monsoon for not looking good like Jesse Ventura.

The Enforcers ( Big Bossman, Bad News Brown, Rick Martel & The Honky Tonk Man W/ Slick/Jimmy Hart) vs The Dream Team ( Brutus The Barber Beefcake, Tito Santana, The Red Rooster & Dusty Rhodes).

Look at the polka dots daddy! What I like about this match before it even starts is the attention payed to the storylines such as Rhodes and Brutus wanting to rough up Bossman and Bad News Brown being a potential deciding factor as he could be a team player or he could simply stick to his guns as a loner. You also have the history between Santana and Martel, it really is the little attention to detail that make the differences. Santana is going to start for The Dream Team while Honky is starting for The Enforcers. Honky jumps Santana, Irish whip but Santana counters and scoop slams Honky. Santana works the arm, Honky uses his knees to take down Santana. The Model Rick Martel comes in and tries punching Santana, Santana fires back but Martel nails a dropkick. Santana blocks an atomic drop to nail Martel with an atomic drop and a school boy for a two count. Monsson plays up that these two were former partners in Strikeforce, Bossman comes in off a tag but Santana nails a deep arm drag. Tag to Dusty who punches and elbows Bossman, Bossman is rocked before Dusty tags Brutus. Honky cheap shots Brutus from the apron before tagging into the match. Snapmare by Honky but Honky misses a fist drop, Brutus is teeing off on Honky but Martel makes a blind tag. Backbreaker and ribs to the back by Martel, Brutus grabs a side headlock and The Red Rooster comes into the match. Big back body drop on Martel, Martel blocks Rooster with a knee to the face. Tag to Honky, chops and dancing from Honky. Front chancery by Honky who tags in Bossman, Bossman goes after Rooster with big rights. Rooster tries to go toe to toe with Bossman but Bossman is too strong for Rooster. Martel is legal, snapmare and knees to the throat by the arrogant Martel. Rooster almost took down Martel with an inside cradle but Martel made it out at two. Honky is in the ring, sunset flip by Rooster for a two count, double knockdown in the ring. Martel and Santana are in the ring, dropkick and a scoop slam by Santana. Big back body drop, Santana goes for the Figure Four, Martel counters by pulling Santana’s hair. Santana positions Martel for an O Connor roll and Martel rolls through, grabs the tights and it’s all over for Santana

Tito Santana has been eliminated by Rick Martel via roll-up with a handful of tights

The Model celebrates, proud of his work and Dusty Rhodes is in the ring. Lock up and Martel’s punches are blocked with huge elbows and a dropkick. Elbow by Rhodes for a two count, Brutus is in who works the arm of Martel. Brutus stamps on Martel’s face after a failed flip attempt, Rooster is in the ring. Side headlock on Martel but Martel counters with a backbreaker. Elbow by Bossman to Rooster, bearhug by Bossman. Rooster holds on in the hold and fights back on Bossman. Rooster bites Bossman and Bad News Brown is in the ring for the first time. Knee lift by Rooster, Brown counters Rooster with a clubbing blow to the back. Headbutt by Brown, right hand and a forearm to the face by Brown. Brown continues to beat down on The Red Rooster. Brown gets nailed accidently by Bossman, Bossman apologizes and Brown is not a happy man. Brown is ready to fight his whole team but Brown walks out on his team.

Bad News Brown has been eliminated via count-out!

Bossman and Brutus square off, Brutus nails a few right hands but with one elbow, Bossman is in control. Tag to Honky, back suplex for a two count for Honky. Honky rakes the eyes and rams Brutus into the top turnbuckle. Honky rakes the eyes of Brutus before Brutus counters an Irish whip and nails a high knee for the pin on Honky Tonk Man.

Honky Tonk Man is eliminated via High Knee!

Martel jumps Brutus and lays in some shots while also choking Brutus. Sleeper hold by Martel, Brutus begins fighting out of the sleeper, shoulder block to Martel but Brutus got too brave as Martel cuts off Brutus with a knee to the ribs. Backbreaker by Martel, Brutus is on the apron as Martel smacks Brutus into the turnbuckle. Fun spot here as Brutus sunset flips Martel, Martel counters by holding onto the ropes of leverage, the referee spots Martel who pleads innocence but meanwhile, Brutus reverses Martel into the pin and gets the three count!

Martel has been eliminated via sunset flip!

So Bossman is all alone against three men, Bossman being a big bear goes after Rooster and Brutus, Rooster dodges a splash but walks into The Bossman Slam and The Rooster is eliminated.

The Red Rooster is eliminated via Bossman Slam!

Brutus is in the ring with Bossman, kicks to the face before Brutus tags Dusty. Dusty nails a high cross body for the win just like that and Bossman jumps Brutus and Rhodes with his nightstick. Rhodes is handcuffed to the top rope, nightstick shots to The American Dream. Brutus chases off Bossman with his hedge clippers. That was a fun opening match, I appreciated the time between eliminations in the beginning, towards the end of the match eliminations were a lot more rampant without a lot of time between the eliminations. However, the fans cheered the babyfaces and booed the heels. They booed when a good guy was eliminated and cheered when a bad guy was eliminated, sometimes you cannot even get that today in wrestling. Solid work from all involved, Bossman gets his heat back at the end of the match so I’d say Bossman came out looking the best.

Winners: Brutus & Dusty over Bossman via high cross body!

The King’s Court (Macho King Randy Savage, Greg Valentine, Dino Bravo & Earthquake W/ Jimmy Hart/Sensational Sherri) vs The 4x4s ( Jim Duggan, Bret Hart, Rugged Ronnie Garvin & Hercules)

To see Bret Hart sing and dance around with Jim Duggan makes my life a little more complete. Duggan goes after Savage on the floor, in the ring, Hercules nails Savage with a forearm. Military press slam by Hercules on Savage, Valentine and Hercules begin brawling. Atomic drop by Hercules. Hart tags in and hammers Valentine (Ha get it? Ok I am sorry). Duggan is in the ring, Duggan rams Valentine into the top turnbuckle shoulder first. Ronnie Garvin is in the ring, hard chops to the chest of Valentine. Garvin Irish whips Valentine and locks in the sleeper. Valentine goes to his corner and tags in Dino Bravo, Bravo puts the boots to Garvin. Inverted atomic drop and a huge chop. Bravo misses the elbow drop and Hercules goes to work on Bravo Knee lift and a clothesline on Bravo. Bravo counters Hercules with an Irish whip and we have Canadian Earthquake who comes in and squashes Hercules who cannot survive the splash.

Hercules is eliminated by Canadian Earthquake via Splash.

Duggan tries to knock down Earthquake but Duggan tastes no success until Bret helps Duggan trip up Earthquake. Ronnie Garvin stays on Earthquake who quickly overpowers Garvin, tag to Bravo and then to Hammer who puts the boots to Garvin. Hammer’s Figure Four is blocked, Garvin rolls up Valentine for a two count. Tag to Macho King, knee drop to Garvin for a two count. Quick tag to Bravo, Bravo puts the boots to Garvin. Backslide by Garvin but Bravo powers out at two. Savage hammers away on Garvin before tagging Valentine. Duggan blind tags Garvin and Duggan nails Valentine with a three-point stance clothesline for the pinfall.

Valentines is eliminated by Duggan via three-point stance clothesline!

Macho King goes right after Duggan, classic offence by Savage as he jumps over the top rope while smashing Duggan’s throat across the top rope. Savage tags Canadian Earthquake, shots to the ribs by the big man. Scoop slam to Duggan, Earthquake misses an elbow. Duggan tags Garvin, right hands and a back rake by Garvin on Earthquake. Bravo tags in off Earhquake, Garvin nails The Garvin Stomp on Dino Bravo. Garvin steps through and Bravo blocks the submission attempt. Savage and Bret Hart are ready to square off, Savage looks scared of The Hitman. Hart nails an inverted atomic drop and drags Savage into the middle of the ring but Savage tags out very quickly to Bravo. Hart drops a second rope elbow on Bravo, tag to Garvin. Sidewalk slam by Bravo on Garvin and Garvin is eliminated.

Garvin is eliminated by Bravo via sidewalk slam!

It’s Duggan vs Earthquake, Duggan punches and wallops Earthquake before tagging Hart. Double clothesline and Earthquake tags in Macho King. Duggan catches Savage which allows Hart to go to work, Savage is pin balled around the ring by Duggan and Hart. Savage is all tied up as Hart tees off on Savage. Savage rakes the eyes and goes for a knee drop, Hart blocks and nails a backbreaker for a two count. Small package by Hart for another two count, Hart climbs to the second rope and misses an elbow. Tag to Bravo, Bravo drops a knee, scoop slam and running elbow by Bravo. Bearhug by Bravo on Hart, Hart fights out of the bearhug but now Earthquake is in the match. Two-handed throat toss by Earthquake, elbow and a cover for a two count. Bravo and Hart grab hold one another with Bravo gaining control, Savage and Earthquake double team Hart in the corner. Macho King is in the ring, Bravo holds Hart but Hart dodges and Macho nails Bravo. Hart tries to make the tag and makes it despite Macho’s attempt at stopping Hart. Two clotheslines by Duggan on Macho Man, Hart tags back into the match but Savage grabs a hold of the hair and tags in Bravo. Hart runs shoulder first into the ringpost, shoulder breaker by Bravo and Macho King nails his Elbow Drop for the pinfall.

Bret Hart is eliminated by Savage via Elbow Drop!

Duggan is all alone against three men, a reversal from the first match where the heel was all alone against three men. Earthquake misses a corner splash, Duggan back body drops Bravo and clotheslines Macho. Duggan clears the ring of all the heels and the crowd is going bananas. Duggan ducks a clothesline and lays out Bravo & Savage with a clothesline of his own but in comes Earthquake who bundles over Duggan. Scoop slam and a giant elbow drop, Duggan hangs on kicking out at two. Bravo is legal, kick to the ribs and tag to Macho King. Double axe handle to the head of Duggan, Savage was looking to drop the knees across the back of Duggan but Duggan dodges the attack. Atomic drop on Savage by Duggan but as Duggan runs towards the ropes, Sherri lowbridges Duggan who falls to the floor. Duggan does not make the ten count and we have your winners. Hacksaw nails Savage and Bravo with his 2x4 to get his heat back but that was a lame finish. Duggan and Hart had a good match while that was a quiet evening for Savage with Bravo working the majority of the match. Certainly, a step down from the opening match with a finish that hurts the overall match.

Winners: The King’s Court over Duggan via Count-Out!

The Million Dollar Team (Ted Dibiase, Zeus, Warlord & The Barbarian) vs The Hulkamaniacs (Jake Roberts, Demolition & Hulk Hogan)

This match has a lot of potential as the crowd comes unglued for Hulk Hogan, we have The Powers of Pain against Demolition and we also have Zeus….Yeah on second thought, this might be a painful watch. The heels try jumping our heroes but Jake pulls out Damien and the heels scatter because snakes are no fun! Zeus wants Hogan but the heels and babyfaces calm down their respective partners. Jake is going to start with Zeus, Zeus tells Jake he wants Hulk and the crowd want to see it and I guess we are going to start with the cast No Holds Barred. Eye to eye, these two begin a shoving match with Zeus not even budging as Hogan has been shaken by Zeus. Hogan tries kicking and punching the big man, Zeus takes it all. Eye rake and scoop slam by Hulk but Zeus is right back on his feet. Hulk takes a shot to the back from Warlord and Zeus chokes the life out of Hulk Hogan. Zeus chokes out Hogan and does not break the hold and shoves the referee. Zeus is disqualified…..

Zeus is eliminated via DQ!

Dibiase continues to beat down Hogan where Zeus left off, choke using the ropes by Dibiase. Dibiase rams Hogan’s head off the turnbuckle, Hogan blocks Dibiase with a boot and in comes Jake. Jake goes to work on Dibiase with rights and lefts, clothesline over the top rope by Jake. Dibiase and Jake brawl on the floor, Jake shoves Dibiase into the ringpost and there is tag to Ax. Ax clubs Dibiase and tags in Smash who clubs Dibiase too. Dibiase runs into Ax’s boot and in comes Hogan. Double axe handle on Dibiase, three man beat down on Dibiase. Hogan punches Dibiase right in the face over and over. Tag to Ax, clothesline to Dibiase, two count for Ax. Dibiase ducks a clothesline and nails an elbow, tag to Warlord. Warlord clubs the back of Ax before tagging in Barbarian. Shoulder breaker by Barbarian, Barbarian misses a second rope elbow allowing Ax some recuperation time. Warlord prevents Ax making the tag, clothesline by Ax but Mr. Fuji trips up Ax and Warlord steals the pinfall.

Ax is eliminated by Warlord via Shenanigans!

Hogan comes in and takes it to Warlord, scoop slam by Hogan before Jake is tagged into the match. Jake punches Warlord before tagging in Smash. Warlord blocks a backbreaker with an eye rake, tag to Barbarian. Smash blocks a boot from Barbarian but Smash cannot capitalize as he misses an elbow. Dibiase chops and punches Smash, fist drop, make it two. Smash barely gets a shoulder up, reverse chinlock by Dibiase. Dibiase plants Smash with a scoop slam but Dibiase misses an elbow from the second rope. Barbarian blind tags into the match and takes Smash’s head off with a clothesline from the second rope.

Smash is eliminated by Barbarian via clothesline!

Jake comes into the ring looking for a DDT on Barbarian but the big man counters and smashes Jake into the corner. Barbarian plants Jake in the corner with a hard Irish whip. Backbreaker by Barbarian and Warlord is legal. Dibiase taunts Hogan which allows The Powers of Pain to double team Jake. Dibiase talks trash and spits at Hogan. Knees to the back of Jake’s head by Dibiase, Dibiase drills Jake with a piledriver. Jake puts his foot on the ropes to survive being pinned. Barbarian drops a headbutt on Jake, Barbarian climbs to the top rope and misses a diving headbutt, Jake crawls towards Hogan, Hogan receives the hot tag and starts laying out anything that moves. Clothesline to Barbarian and multiple elbows, Barbarian powers out. Suplex by Hogan on Barbarian but Barbarian powers out. Warlord comes in illegally and beats up Hogan briefly as Hulk nails the double clothesline. Barbarian and Warlord nail a spike piledriver. The Powers of Pain are disqualified for the spike piledriver.

The Powers of Pain are eliminated by Hogan via DQ!

Dibiase grabs Hogan and applies The Million Dollar Dream. Jake saves Hogan who was almost fading in the submission. Dibiase applies the hold in the middle of the ring, Hogan backs Dibiase into the corner two times to break the hold. Hogan sees Dibiase coming with the double axe handle and nails Dibiase in the ribs. Tag to Jake who runs wild on Dibiase, punches and stunguns are on the menu for Dibiase,  crowd is screaming for the DDT. Short arm clothesline by Jake and here comes Virgil on the apron. Jake brings Virgil into the ring, Jake nails the DDT on Virgil but Dibiase nails a fist drop and puts his feet on the ropes to keep down Jake Roberts.

Jake Roberts is eliminated by Dibiase via Shenanigans!

Hogan looks like he has been in a car wreck so Dibiase goes after the injured WWF Champion. Clothesline and a two count for Dibiase, Dibiase slaps on the sleeper and Hogan Hulks up from the energy of the crowd. Shoulder block by Hogan, double knockdown in the middle of the ring. Atomic drop by Hogan is blocked, Dibiase nails a back suplex but Hogan is on his feet. Right hands and a big boot on Dibiase, Leg Drop and the match is over with Hogan winning for his team. The match had the best crowd reaction of the night but the eliminations on the heel side were a little disappointing, Zeus being disqualified was a smart choice as they were preparing for the big cage showdown but to have three members of a four man team eliminated by DQ is not a wise choice. I thought Dibiase was tremendous going after their babyfaces while his bumping was great on this night. Jake was a house of fire in this match too and Hogan is Hogan which is always entertaining unless it is Halloween Havoc against The Ultimate Warrior which this was not thankfully.

Winner: Hulk Hogan over Ted Dibiase via Leg Drop!

Rude’s Brood (Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect & The Fabulous Rougeaus) W/ The Genius Lanny Poffo vs Roddy’s Rowdies (Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, & The Bushwhackers)

Entertaining promos from both teams before the match, Rude says it is the end for Piper and his team while Piper leads his team through an interview with Mean Gene where he states it is ass-kicking time. Rude might have th most epic moustache of all-time, I am almost certain of this as Rude shows off his custom airbrushed tights. Piper walks down to the ring with that maniacal grin on his face and this could be a really good match. Mr. Perfect starts the match by pummelling Luke. Butch gets the tag from Luke and bits the leg of Perfect. Piper gets the tag and bites Perfect’s arm. Butch bites the ass of Perfect and after being bitten repeatedly, Perfect tags out. Jacque comes into the ring, flipping and showing off as Snuka watches on at this strange individual. Jacque goes low, clubbing blows to the back. Jacque taunts and is wiped out with a flying headbutt, big chop by Snuka. Scoop slam by Snuka who nails a knee drop to the face. Another scoop slam to Jacque, Snuka climbs to the top rope, Snuka Splash and Jacque is eliminated.

Piper and Perfect trade blows with Piper trying to make the tag, Perfect is catapulted into the turnbuckle. Piper tags in Butch, fist drop to Perfect, cover and a two count. Tag to Luke, clubbing blows by Luke to Perfect. Perfect reverses an Irish whip and nails a boot but Piper is in the ring and Piper tees off on Perfect. Snuka lowers his head off an Irish whip and it is over as Perfect grabs The Perfect Plex and Snuka is pinned. Snuka slams The Genius but Perfect saves The Genius from a Snuka Splash. Decent match not as good as I had hoped for, Perfect was great but The Bushwhackers and Snuka were very slow in the ring. It was like the air was being sucked out of the crowd as all they wanted was Piper in the ring and Piper in the ring we did not get for any prolonged period of time.

Winner: Perfect over Snuka via Perfect Plex!

The Ultimate Warriors (Ultimate Warrior, Shawn Michaels, Marty Jannetty & Jim Neidhart) vs The Heenan Family ( Andre The Giant, Haku, Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard)

The Heenan Family enter and there is no Tully Blanchard, we have Bobby The Brain Heenan in the ring. Well, this is certainly a change, Warrior sprints down to the ring and clotheslines Andre to the floor. Andre has been counted out immediately as Andre could not make the ten count after the clothesline.

Andre is eliminated via count-out!

Match really begins with Neidhart and Anderson, shoulder thrusts by Neidhart on Anderson. Anderson uses his foot to block Neidhart, Anderson tags in Haku. Haku clubs Neidhart from behind, Anderson lays into Neidhart as Haku infuriates The Warrior who cannot watch as Neidhart is destroyed in the corner. Haku nails the headbutts, Anderson works the ribs. Neidhart knocks down Anderson but Haku eliminates Neidhart with a thrust kick.

Haku tags Anderson, Michaels saves Jannetty from a double suplex and The Rockers nail a double superkick. Warrior is in the ring, Hakur does his best but Warrior back body drops Haku. Side headlock by Jannetty, Haku drills Jannetty in the corner. Heenan tags into the match, one punch later and Heenan is on the apron. Michaels and Anderson bang heads, Anderson and Michaels trade blows, Michaels gains control. Anderson blocks a monkey flip and Anderson nails the spinebuster and Michaels has been eliminated.

Gorilla press and splash and Anderson is eliminated.

Anderson is eliminated by Warrior via Ultimate Splash!

Heenan is screaming for Anderson to come back to the ring but Heenan is all alone with Warrior, Warrior hurls Heenan across the ropes and into the turnbuckles. Heenan tries running but Warrior drags back Heenan. Shoulder block and a splash, it is all over as Heenan has been pinned by The Ultimate Warrior. The main event was an entertaining affair, Michaels and Anderson were the stars in this match. Anderson worked the majority of the match and from his bumping to his offence, Anderson was great. Michaels showed a lot of heart and have the fans going with his high-risk offence. Having Andre eliminated so quickly was disappointing but Andre’s health was deteriorating so there’s a reason for the quick elimination. Action was fine, Warrior had the crowd in the palm of his hands and the fans were sent home happy with Warrior squashing Heenan.

Winner: Ultimate Warrior over Heenan via Ultimate Splash!

So what did I think of Survivor Series 1989? Well, all the matches felt like they meant something, they were not randomly thrown together which is a problem I feel is very apparent in WWE’s booking today. Within each match, every participant was feuding with another member of the opposite team and like The Royal Rumble, we were given confrontations and matches that we were not used to seeing take place. What I think holds back pay per views like Survivor Series 1989 is the lack of single matches to break up the monotony of Survivor Series Style matches, there were five matches on this card and little differences from one match to the other. It was a smart decision for later Survivor Series to include single matches as to not burn out the fans but you know what? This was a solid show, the matches were all similar but it was the action, the characters and the feuds that made this pay per view enjoyable. Admittedly, the barrage of DQ eliminations and count-out eliminations hurt the bigger matches but I can’t say there was a truly awful match among the five I watched. So what did you think of Survivor Series 1989? Did you think it was unbearable? Enjoyable? How do you think this Sunday’s Survivor Series will be compared to 1989’s? Thank you for joining me for another edition of Flashback Friday right here on WrestlingNewsSource.com, we hope to see you again next Friday!
