The summer of 2016 was one of the best for Pro Wrestling. Looking back we got the G1 Climax, BOLA, Summerslam, Battleground, the Draft, NXT Brooklyn and much more great moments in Pro Wrestling. One of the highlights of this summer was the Cruiserweight Classic that ended with its finale last night. In case you're unaware, TJ Perkins won the Cruiserweight Classic and also the new Cruiserweight Championship.
First of all, I'm extremely happy that the winner of the Cruiserweight Classic also won the new Championship. It would be silly to have the winner of the Cruiserweight Classic be dubbed 'Best in the World' then make them earn the Championship all over again. As happy I am about that I feel like they could have made better decisions.
My first issue isn't with who won the tournament, although we will get to that. My biggest issue is the timing. In my opinion, I think that the winner of the Cruiserweight Classic should not have been crowned during the series. If I was the Head Booker I would have had the semi-finals in the Cruiserweight Classic series on the Network, but then I would have put the final on Raw's first exclusive PPV, Clash Of Champions. The PPV is only two weeks away and I think it would add to the prestige of the Series and the Championship.
Next, let's talk about the winner, TJ Perkins. Triple H came out and drilled the fact that whoever won would be considered the 'Best in the World'. (I'm assuming he meant in the weight class.) This annoyed me. The 'Best in the World' won be contested between TJ Perkins and Gran Metalik, don't get me wrong they are both great competitors but are they really better than ZSJ or Kota Ibushi? Of course not. According to reports, the WWE were unable to sign both Ibushi and ZSJ, which makes me ask the question, why were they signed for the Cruiserweight Classic if the WWE didn't know if they could place them into the Cruiserweight Division?
Considering that ZSJ and Ibushi will most likely not be featured in the Cruiserweight Division, who should have won the Cruiserweight Classic? In my opinion, I would have had the man that can be considered the best out of the participants outside of ZSJ and Ibushi, who is that? Noam Dar. Well, that's just my opinion on who I would have had won the Cruiserweight Classic. Were you happy to see TJ Perkins win? If not, who would you have won?
Just because I can complain about the Classic doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it as a whole. It was probably the most exciting wrestling product over the Summer apart from the G1.
From the Cruiserweight Classic, we got to see a hidden gem in Sean Maluta who held his own against Ibushi. I was also introduced to talent I haven't seen a huge amount of such as The Bollywood Boys and Akira. British Wrestling also got to show off its talent from the likes of Jack Gallagher, ZSJ and Noam Dar.
Also, how about HoHo Lun? What a talent he is. I wasn't aware of him before the Cruiserweight Classic, but man, he is going to go places. I also really enjoyed seeing Ariya Daivari, I love old school heels and Daivari is one of them. Seeing him come out and have the crowd against him the entire time was a delight to see that heel dynamic.
Through all the great moments of the Cruiserweight Classic, my favorite had to be the story told in the ring between two tag team partners competing against each other when Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa battled it out to proceed further in the tournament.
What was your favorite moment from the Cruiserweight Classic? Were you happy to see TJ Perkins win? Who was the stand out performer for you?
