Following his recent arrest for alleged domestic assault along with his fiancee Lauryn McBride,WWE Hall of Famer Jerry "The King" Lawler has officially commented on the allegations against him.
During a phone interview from jail with WMC Action News 5, Lawler stated that the situation began after he arrived home at around 9:30 PM from taking part in a local wrestling event, which was ironically titled "A Night in the Slammer." He then stated that McBride arrived home half an hour later from having watched Game 6 of the NBA Finals with friends, but that she was visibly intoxicated. In the phone interview, Lawler said the following:
"When she drinks, we get into a little bit of a shouting match and then she wants to leave. I was not going to let her leave in the car because she was not in any condition to drive. She got more and more upset."
Lawler then said at that point, McBride started to call 911 and also scratched his face in the process. He also said she threw a candle at him and kicked him in the groin. Lawler stated that the police came out to their home and said that since it was a domestic dispute, both Lawler and McBride would have to be taken downtown.
In terms of the unloaded gun that was mentioned in multiple news reports, Lawler stated that McBride was the one who got the gun herself, specifically stating that she "picked it up and threw it." He also stated that he picked it up and put it on the counter, but did not tell McBride to "kill herself," as many news outlets have reported.
Lawler also said that despite reports to the contrary, he did not physically assault McBride in any way.
Lawler said that the situation comes down to a result of the two having issues only when McBride drinks. He also referenced a situation during the phone interview when McBride attended the CMA festival last week with her mother, aunt, and sister and revealed that she became intoxicated there and got into a fist fight with her aunt.Â
The reporter then asked if Lawler had a message for his fans, to which he stated that this was "an unfortunate situation as the result of somebody drinking too much," and that he also hoped that it would pass.
As previously reported, Lawler remains suspended indefinitely by WWE due to their zero tolerance policy regarding issues pertaining to domestic violence.Â
