Unless you have lived under a rock then you know last Thursday the NCAA Basketball Tournament started. For years it’s been called “March Madness” due to its unpredictability and uncertainty. As I watched the madness unfold this week I could not help but think of the similarities to WrestleMania. Both have goliaths, favorites, sleepers, underdogs, Cinderella’s, and great stories. I’ve decided to have a little fun and break down WrestleMania, March Madness” style.
My Goliath:
The University of Kentucky is currently 36-0 and is expected to win the championship. Many believe they are heads and shoulders above the rest and can’t be stopped. Quite frankly they look unstoppable mowing through every opponent. Can you think of a WWE superstar like that? That’s right my equal to Kentucky is no other than Brock Lesnar. Brock has been the most dominant force in WWE for a year. He ended the Undertakers streak and hasn’t looked back. The question is who can beat the Beast? He is debatably on the most destructive streak in WWE history and it may not at end at WrestleMania.
My Underdog:
Well there are many underdogs in the NCAA Tournament, but if you had to pick one it would be Wisconsin. They reached the Final Four last year an accomplishment most have forgotten. Many have them beaten when and if they face Kentucky. Wisconsin is viewed much the way Rusev is against Cena. No matter the reasoning many fans see Rusev losing his U.S. Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania. I for one am not convinced we see the belt change hands that night. To me it makes sense not only for him to win the U.S Championship I think it’s best for both wrestlers. No matter who wins, going into WrestleMania I feel like Rusev is the true underdog. Which, I will admit the irony in this seeming how they are painting Cena as the underdog.
My Cinderella:
Every year there's that one team that comes out of nowhere to surprise us with their performance in the tournament, sometimes two teams. I have two potential Cinderella’s and they both come from the Intercontinental Championship Ladder Match. The first is StarDust or as he hates to be called Cody Rhodes. Cody is an amazing in ring talent who has put his heart and soul into the StarDust character. I truthfully feel Cody Rhodes and Bray Wyatt have worked harder than anyone to perfect their characters. I think decision makers inside WWE are taking notice and this could be his night. The other wrestler that could surprise us is R-Truth. R-Truth has done some of his best work in and out of the ring the past month or so. Throughout his career he has done anything asked of him no matter how ridiculous it seemed. I strongly believe this could be the night he is rewarded for his hard work. Even if neither wrestler wins I think they both are going to make the most of their WrestleMania moment.
My most likely to disappoint:
Every year there is a team that is ranked high and goes out in the first round and doesn’t meet expectations. This year there have been many. Now I know many of you would plug John Cena or Roman Reigns into this spot. Not me, I think both of those men are going to have great matches. Cena will live up to expectations and Roman will surpass them. For me Seth Rollins has the most potential of letting us down. Rollins is undeniably a great wrestler and ready to explode into the “Main Event” picture. Rollins had an amazing showing and match at the Royal Rumble and personally I do not know how he can top that. I think the match is going to be good but I think we are in for a letdown with Rollins.
The tournament has other similarities with WrestleMania as well. Every year you know Duke will be there to again be a force to be reckoned with. At WrestleMania we know the Undertaker will be there as a force to be reckoned with.
No matter how you look at it March is madness for the NCAA and WWE. They both are fun to watch and end with one big night. I honestly can’t wait to sit and be a fan for the ending of both.
Please tweet me @WNS_Jason and share with me who you think the Goliath, Underdog, and Cinderella are going to be at this year’s WrestleMania.
