John Cena being labeled as an "old man" recently during his feud against the United States Champion Rusev has been a rather hot topic of discussion among WWE fans, as well as people backstage in WWE. Reportedly, most people backstage don't agree with it at all and there is said to be a lot of confusion as to why WWE would do this.
It's being reported that the main reason why they're doing this is to make it look like Cena could actually be vulnerable to the younger powerhouse in Rusev.
Also, moving forward, WWE is planning on slowly phasing Cena out of the main event/World Title picture and allowing younger Superstars like Roman Reigns to step up as the top stars of the company. This isn't to say that Cena will never be a top contender to the World Title again, just that WWE officials realize that Cena has had his run as the top guy and they need to start putting the younger talents in the main events.
Cena will start to be used a lot more to work with younger, developing talents on the rise such as Rusev. WWE officials feel like a program with Cena will be a big boost to any young Superstar's career, whether they end up going over on Cena or not. That being said, there's no word yet on whether or not WWE officials are planning on having Rusev ultimately emerge victorious in his feud against Cena.
