The Hydden View: Words Cannot Destroy a Legacy

Every week after WWE Raw is over its common place to hear WWE fans express their displeasure or pleasure with the product we saw that Monday. It’s our right to be happy or unhappy and because of the internet there are many places to express our opinions. Chat rooms facebook pages, many different forums are right at the fingertips of WWE fans everywhere. I get to share mine here, I am also a member of a few different wrestling fan pages. I hardly ever comment I just read, looking at what the current opinion of the WWE fans are, and lately it hasn’t been good. But, that said most of what was being complained about was the usual stuff people had complained about for years, until last night. I do the live updating for WNS so I try my best to check twitter, and facebook during commercials. Shortly after 9:20 last night I noticed a trend in complaints.

It seemed something John Cena had said angered many fans, but not the normal anger he gets this was hostile. When I am live posting things are moving very fast so I miss a few things, or if I think I heard something and am not sure I don’t put it in. So what had Cena said to create this anger? It was right about the 14th minute of raw when he was having his verbal joust with Seth Rollins. He said “you lied, you cheated, and you stole”, sound familiar to anyone? That’s right it was very familiar to the late great Eddie Guerreros “Lie, cheat, and steal”. The diehard Guerrero fans took to the internet and crucified John Cena for referencing this sacred line. Some even said this would tarnish Guerreros Legacy. WHAT???

Let’s get something straight that is not what Cena said, here is Cenas whole comment “this year you turned your back on your friends. You lied, you cheated, you stole, you mastered the art of becoming a complete scumbag”. Now I do not know if Cena meant to say the comment the way he did, or if he intended to use Guerreros line, or if it just came out. Here is what I know without a shadow of a doubt, 15 times World Champion, future hall of famer, WWE legend John Cena tarnished no legacy last night. Was it disrespectful? Was it tasteless? Was it cheap heat? All of that is up to debate but it most certainly was not done to dishonor Guerrero. Part of me wonders if he even noticed what he had done.

Like or hate Cena the one thing we can all agree on is he is very passionate and when he gets wrapped up in a promo there is no saying what may come out of his mouth. I know that Cena loves the business and he has respect for all the greats in it and that includes Eddie Guerrero.

Eddie Guerrero is one of the greatest of all time; he left a legacy that will stretch for decades to come. I sure know I will eventually share his matches with my grandkids and great grandkids if I get the chance. One simple catch phrase being repeated by another wrestler cannot hurt that sort of legacy.

In closing let’s remember Eddie was bigger than “Lie, Cheat, and Steal”, he was a legend that has left a lasting impression on the business and fellow wrestlers like John Cena.

My question for the readers is how do you feel about his comment, do you think he knew what he was saying, or it was a heat of the moment comment?
