Well since I did not get fired last week, it is time to figure out something to talk about in the world of professional wrestling for this article. After sitting down to catch up on all of my usual television tapings for this week, I realized it was a good showing for tag teams. WWE and TNA are both guilty of letting their tag team division fall to the wayside at times, but it is a staple of the business, and something each company always comes back to. Â
WWE Smackdown hosted a fatal four-way tag team match to determine the number one contenders for the Uso’s belts. It was a good match with several spots and a lot of energy to it, almost felt like it should have been the main event instead of the Cena match. Each of the participating teams looked good in the bout, except for maybe 3MB, who had the least amount of screen time throughout the whole thing. I am not knocking them though. I actually found myself enjoying Rybaxel for the first time ever, even if just a little. I also am sad that The Real Americans have not held the straps yet, which seems like a waste. I am not sure if they are back on track or not, but if they are, there is still time. The Shield had an odd pairing as well, as I was expecting Reigns and Rollins to reunite, being the former champs, but Ambrose and Rollins were the most impressive team in the bout, and The Shield as a whole were the highlight of the segment. It was an enjoyable beat down.
I did not mind that the match had no ending, it was story driven and seemed perfect with all of the chaos of the match. I like what is being setup for the Usos, and the New Age Outlaws are always at their best as heels. I think there could be some good stuff on the horizon, and would not mind seeing any of these teams—well, maybe not 3MB—have a nice long title run. The Uso’s just received the belts though, and I think they should keep them for a bit.
On the TNA front, the bookers went with a three-way dance for the belts. I love the Wolves, and the international flavor that Tigre Uno and Sanada bring to the matches, but the real story here is the Bromans. Wow, that was hard to type. It is true though, the team comprised of Robbie E and Jesse Godderz have really established themselves. I have followed both of them since they came into the company, and truly hated their gimmicks, but that does not mean they do not make a good tag team. Both have improved on their in-ring skills and put work in to get better. The scene they did with Uno and Sanada before the match was pretty funny, and having Zima Ion helps. All three teams put on a good show, and the Bromans are demonstrating why it was not a mistake to make them champions.
My only complaint was not seeing the Bad Influence, and realizing that they were the only team not involved in the match is a reminder of how small TNA’s tag division is right now. I am not saying that the size of the division makes it better in any way, but having multiple teams to switch out helps to prevent feuds and storylines from feeling stale. Tag team wrestling is good because of the wrestling, the strategy, and the chase for the belts. There is the potential there to do storylines that singles matches are not capable of. As always, good tag team bouts has a lot of potential to boost programming when handled well. It was a good week for tag team wrestling, but it could be better, and I hope that it stays good in the weeks to come.
