A title change took place on Free TV last night.
HUZZAH!
The tag team match between The Shield and The Rhodes Bros was terrific but what made it even more thrilling was the idea that the title could change hands. Too many times a title match is just window dressing for just another match. Did anyone really think R-Truth was going to win the Intercontinental Title from Curtis Axel? Speaking of Axel and the Intercontinental title, are both worthless right now? I mean Axel has been pinned about 57 times in the last month or so yet remains champion. Why not have every Curtis Axel match be an Intercontinental title match? With the title being on the line in the first 5 or 10 minutes. That way if Axel is pinned after the 5 minute mark he keeps the title but the challenger gets an automatic title shot in a no-time limit match. The same can be done for the US and World tag team championships. Just an idea. I'm just sick of seeing champions pinned constantly (Axel) or a champion not defending the title at all (Ambrose). Yeah I know Ambrose has a U.S. Title match against Ziggler on Main Event but when will his next defense be because I can't remember when his last one was.
What this company needs, hell what both companies need is a TV Champion. For the uninformed youth, a Television Championship was the most prestigious belts a wrestler could hold. In the glory days of the NWA every territory had one. Georgia, Florida, World Class. When a young Ricky Steamboat beat a young Ric Flair for the Mid-Atlantic Television Championship in 1977 it was equivalent to Daniel Bryan beating Randy Orton. It was the first title Steamboat ever held and it made he and Flair instant superstars. Back in the day when syndication was key and cable tv was just beginning to grow, being a TV champion not only meant you were seen on TV every week, it more or less made you the "face of the company" since a World Champion's appearance on a local show was few and far between. Imagine seeing Flair and Steamboat go at it on TV EVERY WEEK!
Having a TV champion means fans could be treated to the same drama that unfolded on RAW every week. It could also give some much needed exposure to certain superstars that maybe aren't getting the exposure they deserve. Kofi? Justin Gabriel? Drew McIntyre? Seeing any of these wrestlers with a title belt AND seen on TV every week could fill out the very thin group of Top level talent. After Bryant, Punk, Orton and Del Rio there's a huge drop off. WWE needs to make the Intercontinental and US Champions the 2nd best wrestlers in the company. The titles need to be defended every other week or at least not have the champion pinned constantly.
Title matches like the one between The Rhodes and The Shield need to happen more often. That's all I'm saying.
