Jim Ross believes Kevin Owens could still become an AEW World Champion if he ever makes the move from WWE.
Speaking with Conrad Thompson on Grilling JR, Ross discussed how Owens might have fared in AEW. The veteran commentator praised his versatility and said he still sees championship potential in the 42-year-old.
“Champion. He could have been a world champion. Still could. He’s not an old guy. But I think he’s, from what I hear, he’s a good locker room guy,” Ross said.
Owens has spent more than a decade in WWE, becoming one of its most established stars. Ross highlighted his ability to succeed as both a fan favourite and a villain, while acknowledging that WWE’s support during his injury could play a part in any decision about his future.
“He can work with anybody as a babyface or a heel, and that’s a great trait to have. But WWE has taken good care of him while he was hurt. Surgery got paid. Those things are big, especially for the wife of the family. So we’ll see how that transpires as it goes forward.”
Ross said he would welcome Owens to AEW if he were in Tony Khan’s position, particularly because of the physical style and believable storytelling he brings to his matches.
“But it’s not too late for him to be in AEW at some point in time. At least that’s my take on it. And I would welcome him with open arms if I were Tony Khan into my roster, my locker room. But he’s just a hell of a hand, and he’s a rugged heel. His matches have been physical and logical, and that seals it with me. I love that logical physicality and I would love to see it. I don’t know how likely it is.”
Despite his enthusiasm, Ross offered no suggestion that a move is in the works. He believes Owens has re-signed with WWE, where the former Universal Champion is currently scheduled to compete in the upcoming 2026 Money in the Bank ladder match.
