Will Ospreay’s emotional tribute to PAC on AEW Dynamite reportedly followed hours of practice and concerns over whether he could safely land the Black Arrow.
During his match against Ricochet on September 30, Ospreay performed the late Benjamin Satterley’s signature move in his honour. Afterwards, he revealed that he had not attempted it in eight years and had spent much of the afternoon preparing.
“Got to the arena at 2 PM and was in the ring til doors opened practicing. I haven’t performed the Black Arrow for 8 years. Something told me this is the night I could make the jump. I threw my heart out in front of me and Ben caught it. Thank you, Pac.
“Love seeing the reaction videos to the Black Arrow. Honored that I could’ve given so many people that loved Pac one last look. I hope that was the emotional release everybody needed and I’m so grateful I could’ve given that to you. No where near as good as Ben’s but that’s what made him so special. One of one. Thank you all.”
According to Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, Ospreay had privately decided he wanted to finish the match with the Black Arrow, but struggled to execute it in practice.
After arriving at the arena and recording a promo, Ospreay reportedly spent around four to five hours working on the move alongside Ricochet, Mike Bailey and Kyle Fletcher before the doors opened.
Some people reportedly urged him to reconsider because of the risk of injury, while others offered encouragement. Ospreay ultimately went ahead despite still being uncertain whether he could land it, adding context to his emotional reaction afterwards.
Meltzer also shared a story highlighting just how difficult PAC’s signature move was to replicate. When WWE brought in acrobatic Mexican wrestlers to provide motion capture for challenging aerial moves in a video game, PAC, then known as Neville, was needed for the Black Arrow because nobody else on the project could perform it.
For Ospreay, landing the move was a heartfelt way to remember a fellow wrestler whose ability made him one of a kind.
