Kurt Angle Speaks Out About His Past Substance Abuse Issues

Kurt Angle, who was both a TNA and WWE superstar, made an appearance on The Dan Le Batard Show in the afternoon. Angle spoke about how bad his substance abuse was. His issues started when he competed with a broken neck during The Olympics, then things escalated over the years when he was on the road on WWE’s rather unforgiving schedule.

Angle had it so bad, that he was taking around 65 Vicodin a day at one point.

“I was on a lot. There was no way I couldn’t get out of it. The only thing I could do was eventually go to rehab and try to fix my life again but I actually beat it on my own. I stayed in my house for about 10 days and didn’t leave, and I was able to get through the withdrawal effects and then I was put on another medication after that — a lower dose and then because I broke my neck multiple times, I went on Xanax too because I was always getting nervous. I was really having a lot of stress.”

He left WWE in 2006 due to not being able to secure a part-time deal with them. He later went on to join TNA just a couple months later, and that was when drinking became an issue for Angle due to how other TNA stars were drinking around him.

“I started drinking with my meds. Then I started manipulating my meds. I would save all of them for the evening and drink it with alcohol and it got me in a lot of trouble.”

Kurt Angle got 4 DUI’s in 5 years during his time in TNA. Thankfully things got much better when he went to WWE-sponsored rehab program after the DUI's. Angle had spent 30 days there and he's now been clean and sober for over 3 years now.
