WWE Battleground 2016 Preshow

On the preshow, there's WWE Hall of Famers Booker T and Jerry Lawler, Corey Graves, and Renee Young. They previewed the 6-man tag team match of The Club Vs. Cena/Enzo & Cass, with a video first, then the four gave their thoughts. They then said that there was going to be a match on the preshow, with the Usos taking on Breezango, then said that up next was the preview for the match between The New Day and the Wyatt Family.

There then was a Battleground commercial hyping up the main event Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship between current champion Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns.

Next, a hype video was shown showing the feud between the Wyatts and the New Day. The panelists went over the match, talking mostly about Xavier Wood's recent behavior. They then went to predictions, with Graves saying the New Day, Lawler saying the Wyatts, and Booker saying both teams.

A new backstage announcer interviewed Zack Ryder about his match tonight. The panelists then briefly previewed the match for the United States Championship, then gave their predictions with Graves and Lawler saying Rusev while Booker said Ryder. Renee Young then announced that the WWE Universe can tweet #RAWGM and #SDLiveGM to submit their questions to Mick Foley and Daniel Bryan, respectively.

A commercial for the WWE Network aired. The official theme for Battleground is "Feel Invincible" by Skillet.

The finish of the Women's Match between Sasha Banks Vs. Charlotte and Dana Brooke aired. The panelists then previewed the tag team match between Sasha and a mystery partner Vs. Women's Champion Charlotte and Dana Brooke. Lawler said that Summer Rae could be Sasha's partner, Graves said that Nia Jax could be her partner, while Booker said that it could be Lita. 

The video package for the match between Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens aired. RAW Superstar Cesaro replaced Corey Graves to preview the match between Zayn and Owens. They all gave their predictions, with Cesaro saying Owens, Lawler also saying Owens, and Booker saying Zayn. Renee said that next is the live Q+A with General Managers Daniel Bryan and Mick Foley.

A commercial for WWE Swerved on the WWE Network aired.

Tom Phillips is hosting the Social Media lounge with Daniel Bryan and Mick Foley. Daniel answered the question about the biggest change WWE needed. Bryan said that it is all about taking the focus off the authority figures. Foley basically said the same thing. The next question was about each brand picking only one Hall of Famer for their brand in the draft. Foley said Terry Funk. Bryan said Shawn Michaels. The next question asked what each man was gonna do to revitalize each brand. Foley said to increase the interactions between the superstars. Bryan said that he was going to push the envelope forward.

Back to the panelist table. Corey Graves is back at the table. The panelists previewed the Intercontinental Championship match between The Miz and Darren Young. Graves said that Darren Young was going to win. Lawler said the Miz was going to win. Booker also said that the Miz is going to win. Up next is the match between The Usos and Breezango.

The commercial starring Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman for WWE 2K17 aired. The panelists then shilled the Summerslam match between Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton. Then Graves said that Orton was going to be out tonight at Battleground for the Highlight Reel hosted by Chris Jericho. Renee Young threw the show down to Mauro Ranello and Byron Saxton for the tag match.

The Usos entered first, followed by Breezango.

 

The Usos (Jimmy & Jey) (Smackdown) Vs. Breezango (Tyler Breeze & Fandango) (Smackdown)

Jimmy started with Fandango. Fandango hit a shoulder tackle, but Jimmy hit a hiptoss. Tag to Jey. Fandango backs Jey into his corner and tags in Breeze. Jey hits multiple chops on Breeze, but Breeze manages to tag in Fandango, who quickly takes over the match. Jey gets the tag to Jimmy, who is on fire. Samoan drop to both Breeze and Fandango. There are many boos for Jimmy. After Jimmy goes for the pin attempt, Breeze breaks up the pin. Multiple superkicks are given as Fandango goes for the cover for a 2-fall. Fandango puts Jimmy on the top rope, and attempts for the Superplex, but can't do it. Jimmy nails Breeze after Breeze goes for an attack. Jey puts Breeze in the Electric Chair position, but Fandango puts him down. Jimmy hits a Crossbody on both Breeze and Fandango. Jimmy goes to the top rope but Fandango hits an Enziguiri to take him off the top rope. Fandango gets nailed with a Superkick, but Breeze was tagged before. Jimmy goes for the Splash, but Fandango attempts to stop him, but Jey takes him out. Jimmy then goes for the Splash again, but Breeze got his knees up, and Breeze rolled Jimmy up for the victory after 5 minutes and 26 seconds.

Winners: Breezango

 

There was a video package hyping the Triple Threat Main Event between Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns.

Hype video featuring the superstars competing tonight aired.

The announcers for the show are Michael Cole, JBL, and Bryon Saxton. They introduced the Spanish and German Announcers, who are at ringside as well.  

WWE RAW Superstars, WWE Women's Champion Charlotte and Dana Brooke entered for their match with RAW's Sasha Banks. Sasha Banks then entered to a huge ovation from the crowd. Bayley then entered to an amazing reaction from the crowd. She's Banks' partner.

 

WWE Women's Champion Charlotte & Dana Brooke (RAW) Vs. Sasha Banks (RAW) and Bayley

Charlotte and Brooke attack Bayley and Banks and send them outside of the ring. Bayley starts out with Charlotte. Charlotte backs Bayley into the corner and hits a few chops until Bayley hits the springboard elbow on Charlotte. Tag to Banks. Banks tags out Dana Brooke, but Charlotte backs Banks into her corner. Charlotte smashes Banks' face into the middle turnbuckle. Charlotte throws Sasha back into the ring. Tag to Brooke. Brooke with a resthold, but sends Brooke into the ropes. Brooke tries to stop Banks from tagging Bayley, but fails. Bayley gets the tag and is on fire. Charlotte distracts Bayley so Brooke can take control. Bayley rolls Dana up but gets a 2-fall. Brooke continues to use restholds on Bayley. She backs Bayley into the corner and chokes her with her feet. Both women clothesline each other. The crowd is trying to power Bayley to get to her corner, which she does. Tag to Charlotte as well. Sasha comes out on fire, and hits a huge knee to Charlotte. She hits her knees to the midsection in the corner to Charlotte for a 2-fall. Banks goes for the Bank Statement but misses, as Charlotte hits the Natural Selection for a 2-fall. Banks reverses the Figure 8 attempt into the Bank Statement, but Brooke brings Charlotte out of the ring. Bayley takes Brooke out, but Charlotte takes Bayley out. Banks then hits the Bank Statement on Charlotte who taps out after 7 minutes and 25 seconds. 

Winners: Bayley and Sasha Banks

After the match, Bayley and Banks hug.

 

There was a commercial for WWE Ride Along on the WWE Network.

The announcers went over Bayley's debut and victory. They then plugged the match between the Wyatts and the New Day. The video package aired.

 

RAW's New Day entered first. They cut a promo saying that they were the longest reigning tag team champions. They changed the subject to the Wyatt Family. Kingston said that the Draft split up the Wyatts like a Taylor Swift relationship. Big E said something about Bonecrusher. The Wyatts entered. 

The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt (Smackdown), Erick Rowan (Smackdown), & Braun Strowman (RAW)) Vs. WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, & Xavier Woods) (RAW)

Big E starts against Braun Strowman. Tag to Woods. Tag to Wyatt. Tag to Kingston. Strowman with a huge kick to Kofi. Tag to Rowan, who crushes Kingston's head with a resthold. Kingston tries to break out but Rowan hits a clothesline. Tag to Wyatt. Kingston gets backed into the Wyatt's corner. Wyatt with a slam, then the running senton. Cover for a 2-fall. Wyatt with a resthold. Kingston creates a little separation but Wyatt nails a huge clothesline. Tag to Strowman. Tag to Rowan, who stomps on Kingston repeatedly. Tag to Wyatt. As Wyatt was running at Kingston in the corner, Kingston kicks him. Kingston then sends Wyatt outside of the ring, but Strowman throws him inside. Tag to Big E. Tag to Rowan. Big E hits his big splash. Strowman goes up on the apron allowing for Rowan to rollup for a 2-fall. Big E with a huge belly-to-belly suplex for a 2-fall. Woods gets slaughtered by Strowman. Rowan with a huge slam on Big E for a 2 fall. Kingston goes flying onto Strowman. Big E sets up Rowan for the Big Ending, but Rowan counters sending Big E into the corner and outside the ring. Wyatt sets Kingston for Sister Abigail, but Woods breaks Kingston out of it. Wyatt takes Kingston down, then Woods goes right after Wyatt! Woods hit a splash on Wyatt. Rowan enters, but Woods kicks him outside. Strowman goes on the ropes, and catches Woods, but Big E hits his big spear threw the ropes on Strowman. Wyatt does his weird crabwalk, then hits Sister Abigail on Woods to win after 8 minutes and 47 seconds.

There was a commercial for Summerslam on August 21 in Brooklyn, New York.

The announcers showed a Roman Reigns tweet about his return. The crowd mostly booed.

 

Lana was in the ring to introduce United States Champion Rusev. Rusev entered, then Ryder, who entered wearing an American-colored jacket. The Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian announce teams were shown. 

United States Championship: Rusev (c) (with Lana) (RAW) Vs. Zack Ryder (Smackdown)

Rusev starts with a resthold on Ryder, with two 1-fall counts. Ryder battles back with a few elbows. He runs outside of the ring, and Rusev follows, Ryder then hits a dropkick on Rusev from inside the ring. Rusev dodges a dropkick from the top rope from Ryder, then kicks him down to the mat. He then clubs Ryder while he's down. Rusev hits a big Spinning Heel Kick for a 2-fall. Another resthold on Ryder. Ryder battles back with forearms. Rusev then gets in the position for the Broski Boot, but Rusev reverses. Ryder reverses a Suplex into a Neckbreaker, then hits the Broski Boot for a 2-fall. Rusev goes outside the ring and drives Ryder into the barricade. He then hits a front Suplex onto Ryder onto the Barricade. Ref is at a 5-count as Ryder hasn't moved. Rusev sends himself into the barricade, in an attempt to attack Ryder. Ryder then hits a Missile Dropkick off the barricade! Rusev sends Ryder into the ring, but Ryder hits the Rough Ryder! Rusev reverses the Elbro Drop and Superkicks the back of Ryder's head. Rusev then locks in the Accolade. Ryder gets to his knees, but Rusev goes on his back, and Ryder taps out after 7 minutes and 1 second.

Winner by Submission and Still United States Champion: Rusev

Post-match, Rusev attacks Ryder with kicks. Mojo Rawley then runs out to the ring, and gets in Rusev's face. Rusev leaves the ring with his title and Lana.

 

There was a commercial for WWE Swerved on the WWE Network, followed by a commercial for the WWE Cruiserweight Classic on the WWE Network. 

Mick Foley is then seen talking to Stephanie McMahon, as Seth Rollins walks in. They talk about the match tonight and bringing the WWE Championship to RAW. He says that in 9 months, there will be a boom of babies named "Rollings". He left as Foley said to not blame him because Stephanie drafted him.

Hype video for Sami Zayn Vs. Kevin Owens was played.

 

Sami Zayn enters first to a big ovation from the crowd. Kevin Owens enters shortly after.

Kevin Owens (RAW) Vs. Sami Zayn (RAW)

Zayn immediately goes for the Helluva Kick but Owens rolls outside the ring. Owens sends Zayn into the barricade, then Zayn quickly returns the favor. He sends him into the barricade again and hits a clothesline. Zayn gets a big kick on Owens, and as Zayn was going to the top rope Owens trips him up. Owens then hits the Cannon Ball for a 2-fall. Owens hits a few chops and punches, then kicks Zayn down. Owens with a 1-fall. Owens steps on Zayn's hand as he mocks Zayn and the crowd. Both men attempt a Suplex as Owens throws Zayn onto the top rope. Big senton onto Zayn for a 2-fall. Owens with a resthold, as he mocks Zayn's fans. Zayn with the michinoku driver on Owens for a 2-fall. Zayn tries to bounce off the rope to land on Owens, but lands on his shoulder on the apron. Owens throws Zayn's shoulder into the corner post. Zayn hits the Blue Thunder Bomb when both mens enter the ring for a 2-fall. I missed about a minute of action, and came back when Owens hit a Superkick on Zayn, then locked in the Crossface. Zayn hits the Exploder Suplex into the corner, but Owens rolls outside the ring when Zayn attempted for the Helluva Kick. Zayn goes onto the top rope, but Owens grabs him onto his shoulders. Zayn Suplexes Owens onto the apron to a huge reaction from the crowd. The referee gets to a count of 9 as Owens gets back into the ring. Owens hits a kick on Zayn as Zayn was going for his spinning DDT through the corner outside the ring. Owens then hits the Cannonball, then the Frogsplash. Owens with a 2-fall. Owens goes for the Popup Powerbomb, but Zayn reverses and hits a Tornado DDT. Owens hits a Superkick, but Zayn manages to hit 2 Exploder Suplexes for a 2-fall. Owens hits the Popup Powerbomb during an attempted Helluva Kick, but gets a 2-fall after Zayn puts his foot on the rope. Owens slaps Zayn twice, as Zayn asks for more, and slaps Owens. Zayn then hits another Exploder Suplex into the corner, then another to the middle of the ring, then hits the Helluva Kick. Owens falls on Zayn, who sends him back into the corner, to hit another Helluva Kick. Zayn covers and wins after 18 minutes and 22 seconds.

We take it back to the Kickoff Panel with Renee Young, Booker T, Jerry Lawler, and Corey Graves who go over what has happened over the night. 

 

Natalya enters the ring for her match with Becky Lynch. Becky Lynch enters shortly after.

Natalya (Smackdown) Vs. Becky Lynch (Smackdown)

Lynch is on fire early. Natalya goes out of the ring to avoid her for the current moment. Lynch hits a dropkick as Natalya rolls out for a breather. Becky then hits an Axehandle. Lynch gets caught in the apron as Natalya attacks her leg. Natalya rolls her into the ring, as she now is targeting the leg. The match continues as Natalya is wearing Lynch down. Lynch nails a nice Enziguri, then battles back against Natalya. Lynch with a 2-fall. Natalya rolls up Lynch for a 2-fall, then locks the Sharpshooter in, but Lynch grabs the ropes, forcing the break. Lynch nails a huge kick to her chest. Lynch goes up to the top rope, and hits a Missile Dropkick for a 2-fall. Lynch starts pounding on Natalya, until Natalya nails Lynch with a kick, then locks in the Sharpshooter. Lynch taps out after 9 minutes and 4 seconds. 

Winner by Submission: Natalya

 

Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan approach WWE Champion Dean Ambrose about keeping the WWE Championship on RAW. 

There was a brief commercial hyping Randy Orton Vs. Brock Lesnar.

 

Darren Young made his entrance with his Life Coach Bob Backlund. A replay aired from RAW 2 weeks ago where Young won the Battle Royal, which led him to this match. The Miz then entered with his wife, Maryse. The Miz is wearing a cool-looking mask, as is Maryse. 

Intercontinental Championship: The Miz (c) (with Maryse) (Smackdown) Vs. Darren Young (with Bob Backlund) (RAW)

The Miz started the match avoiding Young. Young then gets a headlock in on Miz, but Miz gets a wristlock in. Young with two pinfalls for a 1-fall both times. The Miz took over after a distraction from Maryse. Miz drove Young into the barricade, then into the apron. He threw him back into the ring for a 2-fall. Miz with another resthold. Miz went for the Neckbreaker, but Young countered, but Miz went for a Backslide, but Young was battling out of it. Young with a Backslide for a 2-fall. Miz with a big kick, then multiple stomps into the corner. Young with a huge clothesline from the corner. Young with multiple chops and elbows to knock Miz down. Then Young hit a German Suplex, Young then hit his Back Suplex onto the apron for a 2-fall. Backlund then yelled for Young to lock in the Crossface Chickenwing. Miz tried to leave but Backlund got in the way, and backed him close to the ring. Darren grabbed Miz and brought him into the ring. Maryse slapped Backlund, but fell over and acted as if Backlund hit him. Miz knocked Backlund over, so Young went outside the ring and locked in the Crossface Chickenwing. The ref called for the bell after 8 minutes and 41 seconds.

Winner: None due to Double Disqualification (Miz is still Intercontinental Champion)

 

The video package aired for the 6-man Tag Team Match pitting AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows Vs. Enzo Amore, Big Cass, and John Cena.

 

John Cena entered first. There were plenty of people cheering "John Cena Sucks" during his entrance. Enzo and Cass entered next. They called themselves the Mount Rushmore of Certified G's. Enzo called The Club a teenage girl in the Scream trilogy, because they all know they are going to make a bad decision. Enzo said he's gonna give the Club some advice: Don't eat yellow snow, don't pee in the wind, lie on your resume, I missed the 4th one, and to not look someone in the eye when eating a banana. He then said that they would knock their teeth down their throat, then poop them out. He said that the Club would be physically defeated the mentally depleted. Cass said that Styles has a soccer mom haircut, then listed a bunch of things soccer mom stuff. Cass then did his thing, calling them SAWFT. Then The Club entered. 

The Club (AJ Styles (Smackdown) and Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson (RAW)) Vs. John Cena (Smackdown) and Enzo Amore & Big Cass (RAW) 

The match started out with all three members of the Club wearing down Enzo. After Enzo took all three members of the Club out, he managed to tag to Cena, who attempted an AA to Styles, who landed on his feet and hit Cena with a Pelee Kick. All 6 men got involved, as Anderson sent Cena over the announcer's table. Styles hit the Phenomenal Forearm onto Gallows by accident. Enzo then hit an awesome DDT off the apron to Anderson. Cena barely made the 10-count to get back in the ring. Styles then picked up Cena for the Styles Clash. He hit it successfully, but Cass pulled Styles out of the ring. Cass hit an amazing boot onto Styles, but Gallows got him from behind. Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer onto Cass, then turned their attention to Enzo. Anderson gets sent outside the ring by Enzo. Gallows hits a big kick on Enzo, as Cena rolls back into the ring. Gallows attempts a corner splash, but Cena avoids it. Cena hit the ropes as Styles was on the top rope, making him fall. Cena then went for the AA on the top rope, but Styles got out of it, but Cena got him back into position and nailed the AA off the top rope then pinned for the victory after 14 minutes and 30 seconds. 

Winners: John Cena, Enzo Amore, and Big Cass

 

 

Highlight Reel Hosted by Chris Jericho with Special Guest Randy Orton

Chris Jericho entered for the Highlight Reel. Jericho introduces his guest, returning after a 9-month injury, it's Randy Orton! Michael Cole plugged Orton's match with Brock Lesnar at Summerslam in four weeks from tonight. Orton says that he realized for the past 9 months that he's missed something: the fans. He said that the crowd put him in such a great mood that he doesn't mind sharing the ring on his big return with Jericho. Jericho said that he should be blessing him. Orton told him that Jericho should be careful because his mood could change quickly. Jericho told him to watch it or he might hit a Codebreaker Outta Nowhere. Jericho told Orton that there's been a brand split, and that Orton's on Smackdown, if he didn't know. Jericho said that he's paired with the best person he's ever met: Stephanie McMahon. He then shifted to Dean Ambrose randomly, talking about the 69 tacks that Ambrose put into his arm. Jericho said that he has a gift for Orton: The Gift Jericho, and to Drink it in, Man. Orton said that for a second, he felt as if he wasn't on the Highlight Reel, but instead on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, because of Jericho's haircut. Jericho used the Jeritron 6500 to show a video package highlighting Brock Lesnar. Jericho wondered if Orton has, for all of this time, has avoided Brock, maybe because he's scared of him. Orton then brought up Fandango. Jericho said that at Summerslam, Lesnar is going to kick Orton's ass. Orton said that it takes 20 suplexes to get to Suplex City, but it only takes 1 RKO to get to Viperville. Orton said "No Enhancements Needed", in reference to Lesnar's failed drug test related to UFC 200. Orton then dropped the mic. Jericho said that something tells him that he's going to pay for that little comment.  Jericho taunted Orton to hit him with an RKO, saying that he's not going to do a damn thing. Jericho told Orton to stay out of his business. Jericho then turned his back, and Orton turned him around, waited a few seconds, then dropped Jericho with an RKO.

The rosters of both RAW and Smackdown Live were shown. RAW General Manager Mick Foley made his entrance, followed by RAW Commissioner Stephanie McMahon. Smackdown Live Commissioner was next, followed by Smackdown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan. There were four chairs at ringside, so they are there to watch the main event.

Seth Rollins entered first, followed by Roman Reigns, then Champion Dean Ambrose. Rollins got a good reaction, Reigns got completely booed, and Ambrose got a great reaction. 

WWE Championship: Dean Ambrose (c) (Smackdown) Vs. Seth Rollins (RAW) Vs. Roman Reigns (RAW)

There was a loud "Roman Sucks" chant to start. Rollins stuck his fist out to try to make friends with either Ambrose or Reigns. Reigns hit a Shouldertackle on Rollins. Ambrose sent Rollins out of the ring. Ambrose tried to cover Reigns, but only got a 1-fall. Rollins and Ambrose wrestled for about a minute before they double-teamed Rollins. Reigns rolled up Ambrose, for a 2-fall. Both men exchanged punches. Ambrose tried a Crossbody, but Reigns didn't move. Rollins then started pounding on Reigns. Rollins with a Swingblade on Reigns. Rollins went for a cover on Ambrose for a 2-fall. The fight spills outside the ring. Reigns sends Rollins into the timekeeper area. Ambrose dives from the announce table onto both Reigns and Rollins. Ambrose with a bulldog. He goes to the top rope, and hits a diving elbow drop for a 2-fall. Rollins hit a splash for a 2-fall. Rollins goes for the Pedigree, but Reigns breaks free. Reigns starts to get heated as he hits multiple clotheslines on both Rollins and Ambrose. He hits a Tilt-a-Whirl Slam on Rollins. He hits Superman Punches on both Rollins and Ambrose. Ambrose takes Reigns out with a Clothesline. Rollins and Ambrose both beat down on Reigns. They go for a Double Powerbomb, but Reigns breaks free. Ambrose sends Reigns outside of the ring. Ambrose hits a nice Suicide Dive, then Rollins hits a Dive from the top rope. Rollins and Reigns hit a Double Powerbomb through the Spanish Announce Table. Rollins pulls a chair from under the ring and hits Ambrose. Rollins then turns his attention to Reigns. Rollins goes for the Pedigree on Ambrose, but Ambrose breaks out of it. Rollins goes for a Buckle Bomb, but Ambrose reverses and sends Rollins into the corner. Ambrose goes to the top rope, but Rollins quickly gets up and hits a Superplex, then the Falcon Arrow, for a 2-fall. Reigns is still outside the ring. Reigns comes back in and takes out Ambrose, then hits a Sitout Powerbomb on Rollins. Reigns then sets up the Superman Punch on Ambrose, but Ambrose reverses it. Reigns sets up for the Razor's Edge into the Powerbomb, but Ambrose goes for the Backslide. Reigns then nails a Superman Punch on Ambrose after the attempted Wacky Lie. Rollins then goes for the Pedigree, but Reigns breaks out of it. Rollins nails the Buckle Bomb, but Reigns comes back immediately with a Superman Punch. Reigns nails a spear on Rollins, but Ambrose comes in and nails the Dirty Deeds on Reigns. He pins Reigns to win.
