UFC and WWE fans alike have been waiting for CM Punk’s debut into mixed martial arts, and it looked like it would come this summer. An opponent had even been picked for Punk when Mickey Gall won his debut over Mike Jackson at UFC Fight Night 82.
But Punk won’t be debuting this summer. According to MMAFighting.com‘s Ariel Helwani, Punk will have back surgery due to a herniated disc.
“My back has always bugged me,” Punk told Helwani. “Figured it was just wrestling sh*t. Turns out it was.
“It got bad enough to the point where I couldn’t do anything the week before I went to train with the New Jersey Devils last month. One day I could manage, the next day I couldn’t. I’ve been in agony for almost a month. Chiropractor, acupuncture, massage, cryotherapy … nothing worked.”
This is at least the second delay for CM Punk’s debut, having separated his shoulder in 2015. Punk’s credibility in MMA was called into question by a section of fans the moment he signed with the UFC, citing a lack of experience in martial arts competition and crediting the move to his high profile from his WWE career.
