Backstage Talk About WWE's Signing of Daria Berenato From Tough Enough

Daria Berenato was one of a handful of contestants from the most recent season of Tough Enough who were signed to developmental deals after the season ended. She has an amateur background in mixed martial arts fighting and has been given an MMA-inspired gimmick at NXT events under the nickname of "The Jersey Devil".

There are reportedly two reasons why WWE signed her to a deal. The first is that she is apparently good friends with Maria Menounos, who has worked with WWE several times in the past and maintains a good relationship with the company. The second reason is because Berenato is openly gay, and WWE may see her as a potentially inspirational character for the gay and lesbian community, similar to how Darren Young has received much support since he came out as being gay a few years back.
